A Plug-in Hybrid Bearing a Legendary Name
At this year's Auto Shanghai, a nostalgic name was heard after a long time: the Buick "Riviera."
For those familiar with American automotive history, it's well known that from the 1963 to 1999 model years, despite occasional interruptions in production due to model changes, it was a model that consistently led the American luxury personal coupe market.
The "Riviera Concept," unveiled to the world in Shanghai, is a model that suggests a new generation of Buick personal coupes, styled with the theme of water flow. It's designed with the Chinese market in mind, where attention is focused on premium coupes, especially among younger buyers.
Development was carried out by the Chinese side. If a production model were to be born based on this concept car, it's conceivable that it would be announced by Shanghai GM, the joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.
However, the Riviera Concept was a concept car that conveyed sufficient appeal to global markets, namely America and Europe. This was not solely due to its dynamic yet sophisticated exterior design. The powertrain has only been announced as a plug-in hybrid, and it is said to feature a non-contact charging system.
Will the revival of the Riviera become a reality? Personally, I hope this new plan originating from China will spread to the rest of the world.
