Volkswagen views the 2013 Geneva International Motor Show as the start of a new stage in its model offensive. As we've already reported, they unveiled the production version of theXL1, theGolf GTI, theGolf GTD, and theCross up!. Furthermore, they will exhibit the "Golf TDI BlueMotion" with a diesel engine achieving 3.2 L/100km fuel economy, the "Golf TGI BlueMotion" which uses natural gas to achieve a range of 1,360km and fuel economy of 3.4 kg/100km, and the "Jetta Hybrid" with a hybrid powertrain achieving 4.1 L/100km fuel economy. Additionally, the addition of the "Golf Variant," a wagon body, as a Golf body variation was announced.
This new "Golf Variant" has a body length of 4,562mm, which is 307mm longer than the standard Golf, and offers a luggage capacity of 605 liters, an increase of 100 liters from the previous generation. With the rear seats folded down and utilizing the space up to the front seatbacks, the capacity expands to 1,620 liters. The depth, with the rear seats in place, is 1,055mm, and with the rear seats folded, it extends to 1,831mm. The width is also at least 1,003mm at its narrowest point. The luggage opening is positioned 630mm above the ground.
This new model, which is 105kg lighter than its predecessor, achieves 3.3 L/100km fuel economy in the "Golf TDI BlueMotion" variant, equipped with the most environmentally friendly diesel engine producing 81kW (110ps) and paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. While the basic drivetrain is FF, 4MOTION all-wheel drive models are also available for diesel engine variants with outputs of 77kW (105ps) and 110kW (150ps).
The D-pillar, which forms a slight curve when viewed from the side, inherits the design of the new Golf's C-pillar, increasing the design similarity between the Golf and the Golf Variant more than ever before. The character line temporarily disappears above the rear wheel arch before reappearing.
From a side profile perspective, the shortened overhangs have resulted in an extended wheelbase, from 2,578mm in the previous generation to 2,638mm. According to Volkswagen, this also positively impacts driving dynamics.
The model lineup is divided into "Trendline," "Comfortline," and "Highline" based on equipment differences. Trendline and Comfortline are available for diesel engine models. The most fuel-efficient model features a partially closed front radiator to improve aerodynamics and flaps on the frame of the rear window. Additionally, optional features include underbody and wheel arch paneling to further reduce air resistance, and a suspension that lowers the vehicle height by 15mm.
Four gasoline engine options are available, with maximum outputs of 63kW (85ps), 77kW (105ps), 90kW (122ps), and 103kW (140ps). Three diesel engine options are available, with maximum outputs of 77kW (105ps), 81kW (110ps), and 110kW (150ps).
Sales in Europe are scheduled to begin this August.
