Arriving in Japan This Spring
The full model change of the Lexus "IS" was one of the most anticipated vehicles at this year's Detroit show, where Japanese brands were particularly prominent.
The new "IS," to be released in the US as a 2014 model, has a 70mm longer wheelbase of 2,800mm to improve rear-seat room. The overall length is 4,665mm, a slight increase. However, the adoption of Lexus's signature spindle grille, the distinctive front fascia with L-shaped clearance lamps separated from the headlamps (a first for the IS), and the bold styling from the taillamps to the bumper create a more dynamic presence than ever before.
Furthermore, the body has achieved a dramatic increase in rigidity compared to previous models through the introduction of new production techniques such as laser screw welding and structural adhesives. Combined with a newly designed suspension, this has led to significant improvements in driving performance and comfort.
The lineup includes the "IS250" and "IS350," along with the new hybrid "IS300h." This powertrain, utilizing a 2.5-liter direct-injection engine, is an ambitious effort targeting CO2 emissions below 100g/km while producing a system output of 220ps.
The sporty "F SPORT" specification will also continue. It newly adopts the "AVS" adaptive variable suspension dampers, and the "IS350 F SPORT" is equipped with "VGRS" variable gear ratio steering and "LDH" rear-wheel steering system. The interior features a moving meter inspired by theLFA, which is also noteworthy.
The new "IS" is scheduled to go on sale in Japan this spring. It is anticipated that the "IS300h" will account for 60-70% of sales in the Japanese market.
