The Volkswagen American SUV
The "CrossBlue" is a 6-seater SUV, approximately 5 meters long, built on the Volkswagen Group'sMQB platformMQB platform. Primarily aimed at the North American market, its production would further enhance Volkswagen's current SUV lineup in North America, which consists of the 4.4-meter Tiguan and the 4.8-meter Touareg.
The powertrain combines a TDI clean diesel engine producing a maximum output of 140 kW (190 ps) and 400 Nm of torque with two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear. A 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) drives all four wheels. Fuel economy is rated at 2.1 L/100 km on the EU test cycle, with a system output of 225 kW (306 ps), 700 Nm of torque, and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 7.5 seconds.
While it is a four-wheel-drive vehicle, the rear wheels are driven solely by the rear-mounted motor, which is not mechanically connected to the engine. Therefore, when all-wheel drive is forcibly required, such as in "Off-road Mode," and the battery charge is low, the front motor acts as a generator. The electricity produced then drives the rear motor, enabling four-wheel drive through a "propeller shaft by wire" mechanism.
Replacing the propeller shaft, a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion battery is housed within the center tunnel. On a full charge, it offers a range of approximately 33 km, with the maximum speed limited to 120 km/h for efficient battery operation. The normal top speed is 204 km/h.
While its appearance is that of an SUV, it boasts the utility of a minivan. The design wasWalter de Silvaand Klaus Bischoff. It's described as an interpretation of the American SUV aesthetic through the Volkswagen lens. While lacking the show-stopping flair of a typical concept car, it's considered a design that hints at a new SUV series, ready for production at any time.
The vehicle exhibited this time is painted in "CrossBlue Glass Flake" and measures 4,987mm in length, 2,015mm in width, and 1,733mm in height. The tread width is 1,686mm at the front and 1,696mm at the rear. It is equipped with 285/45 tires and new 21-inch wheels. The flared fenders emphasize its powerful stance.
The trunk capacity is 335 liters. This can be expanded to 812 liters by folding down the third-row seats. Folding down the second-row seats further increases the capacity to nearly 2,000 liters, with a depth of 2,230mm. If the front passenger seat is also folded, the length extends to 3,110mm.
With its realistic design, functionality, and utility, the CrossBlue is a vehicle that holds considerable promise for production.
