Hybrid Powertrain: The Latest Technology

The new IS has finally made its world premiere. As previously reported, the lineup consists of three models: the flagship "IS 350" equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing a maximum output of 228kW (306ps) and 375Nm (38.2kgm) of torque; the "IS 250" with a 2.5-liter V6 engine; and the "IS 300h," featuring Lexus' first hybrid system.

The hybrid powertrain for the "IS 300h" is a signature Toyota/Lexus system, codenamed "2AR-FSE." It combines a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, utilizing the Atkinson cycle and direct injection "D-4S" technology for a maximum output of 130kW (174ps), with a motor generating 105kW (141ps). This is the same cutting-edge powertrain recently introduced in the hybrid model of the new "Crown."

The "F SPORT" package, available for all grades, not only enhances the interior and exterior with a sporty aesthetic but also features dedicated suspension tuning and electric power steering (EPS). The "IS 350 F-SPORT" can also be equipped with variable gear ratio steering (VGRS).



In terms of safety, the vehicle is equipped with Lexus' latest high-tech safety features, including "Auto High Beam," which automatically switches to low beams to avoid dazzling oncoming or preceding vehicles while maximizing illumination for night visibility; "Lane Departure Alert"; and "Blind Spot Monitor," which warns of vehicles entering the blind spot to the rear and sides.

Furthermore, it comes standard with ten airbags, including side airbags for the rear seats. It also features Lexus' first "Pop-Up Hood" system, which instantly raises the hood upon pedestrian impact to minimize head injuries, enhancing safety in the event of an accident.

The introduction of this new IS to the Japanese market is scheduled for around this spring.
