Auris Wagon and Hybrid: Not Available in Japan

Taking center stage at the Toyota booth was the "Auris," recently unveiled in Japan. However, its lineup differs from the Japanese version.

The European specification offers five powertrains. Two gasoline options: 1.3-liter and 1.6-liter. Two diesel options: 1.4-liter and 2.0-liter. And continuing from the previous generation is the hybrid, known as HSD.

Introduced in 2010 as the first model of its kind in the class, the "Auris HSD" has achieved over 60,000 sales within Europe, making it the second most popular hybrid vehicle after the Prius. The new model retains the hybrid system that combines a 1.8-liter engine with an electric motor, producing a system output of 136ps. It achieves an impressive CO2 emission figure of under 89g/km. A key selling point is the preservation of cargo space comparable to other models, thanks to the placement of the nickel-hydrogen battery beneath the rear seats.

The "Auris Touring Sports" is a model intended for the wagon market, which accounts for 25 percent of sales in this segment. Its overall length is extended by 285mm compared to the Auris, reaching 4,560mm. While the show car was an HSD, various engines are expected to be available for the production model.

This new front design, common across Toyota vehicles and first adopted by the Auris, is also featured on the minor change version of the Europe-exclusive Verso. This marks a renewed offensive in the European market, where its presence had been fading, by imbuing the car with a strong individual identity.
