Seventh Model Joins the MINI Family
Introducing the MINI Paceman!
At the Paris Motor Show, a seventh model will join the MINI lineup. At the Detroit Show in January 2011,appeared as a conceptit's the "MINI Paceman," a crossover that fuses SUV and coupé elements.

A 3-Door Variant of the Crossover
The MINI Paceman isBMWcalls a SAC (Sports Activity Coupé), a crossover model. It can be considered a 2-door coupé version of the SUV crossover model, theMINI Countryman (Japanese model name: MINI Crossover).
While clearly possessing the face and proportions of the MINI family, its longer front doors compared to the Crossover, a roofline that slopes down towards the rear, and a shoulder line that rises towards the rear, emphasize a sportier image. Furthermore, a distinctive feature is the horizontal arrangement of the rear combination lamps, a first for MINI.
The lineup consists of four models in total: gasoline engine models "Cooper" and "Cooper S," and diesel engine models "Cooper D" and "Cooper SD." Additionally, a "John Cooper Works" model with superior sports performance to the Cooper S is also planned.
Like the MINI Crossover, the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system is available for models other than the Cooper. The transmission for all models is either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.
The powertrain features a 1.6-liter gasoline engine based on BMW's Valvetronic variable valve management system. The "Cooper S" is equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger, producing a maximum output of 135 kW (184 ps) at 5,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 240 Nm across a wide range from 1,600 to 5,000 rpm. Additionally, pressing the overboost button temporarily increases the maximum torque to 260 Nm between 1,700 and 4,500 rpm. The naturally aspirated engine in the "Cooper" delivers a maximum output of 90 kW (122 ps) at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 160 Nm at 4,250 rpm.
The diesel engines are either 2-liter or 1.6-liter units employing variable geometry turbochargers and common-rail direct fuel injection. The 2-liter engine in the "Cooper SD" produces a maximum output of 105 kW (143 ps) at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 305 Nm between 1,750 and 2,700 rpm, reaching a top speed of 200 km/h. CO2 emissions are 122 g/km with the manual transmission. The "Cooper D" uses a 2-liter engine with the automatic transmission and a 1.6-liter engine with the manual transmission, both producing a maximum output of 82 kW (112 ps) at 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 270 Nm between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm.
The suspension, with MacPherson struts at the front and multi-links at the rear, comes standard with a lowered sports suspension. This can be exchanged for the normal suspension at no charge.
Body dimensions are 4,109-15 mm in length, 1,786 mm in width, and 1,518-22 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,596 mm. Compared to the MINI Crossover (Japanese specifications: 4,105 mm length x 1,790 mm width x 1,550 mm height), the length and width are similar, but the height is approximately 30 mm lower.
The rear seats, lacking doors, are limited to two separate seats, but legroom is secured by shaving the back of the front seats. The MINI Centre Rail is a split type for the front and rear seats as standard, but a continuous type can be optionally installed. Trunk capacity is 330 liters, expandable to 1,080 liters by folding down the rear seats.
Exterior features include 16-inch light alloy wheels as standard for the "Cooper" and "Cooper D," and 17-inch wheels for the "Cooper S" and "Cooper SD," with options up to 18-inch and 19-inch wheels available. Furthermore, in typical MINI fashion, a wide range of options are available, from functional equipment such as adaptive xenon headlights and electric glass sunroofs to design elements like bonnet stripes.
