Two Special "208" Models Unveiled
The "208," the successor to the Peugeot 207, is already on sale in Europe. Its sport model, the "208 GTi," and its premium model, the "208 XY," will make their world premiere at the Paris Motor Show, starting this month on the 27th.
as we have already reported on OPENERS, the "208" appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in March of this year, and at that time, concept models for the "208 GTi" and "208 XY" were exhibited.
The models to be announced at this Paris Motor Show are believed to be production models, or versions very close to them. While the release is announced for spring 2013, specific dates have not yet been revealed.
The GTi Legend Reborn
"We aim to recreate the legend of the 205 GTi." Peugeot announces this for the "208 GTi," the sport version of the "208," which will be powered by the same 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo engine found in the brand's "RCZ" and the Citroën"DS3"The engine produces a maximum output of 197 ps and a maximum torque of 275 Nm. It achieves 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. CO2 emissions are 145 g/km.
The front and rear tracks have been widened by 10 mm at the front and 20 mm at the rear, with dedicated suspension to tighten the chassis and enhance handling performance. The front suspension is a MacPherson strut, and the rear is a torsion beam. Furthermore, to match the increased power, stopping power has also been enhanced, with large brake discs—302 mm at the front and 249 mm at the rear—housed within 17-inch wheels fitted with 205/45 tires. The vehicle weight is 1,160 kg, which is 100 kg lighter than the previous "207 GTi."
Additionally, the return of the GTi emblem on the C-pillar, which had disappeared since the "205 GTi" (and was absent on the "206GTi" and "207GTi"), is a welcome detail for Peugeot fans.
Premium Compact
Alongside the "208 GTi," the "208 XY" will also make its world premiere at this Paris Motor Show. Positioned as a premium grade, this model will be available in a total of six body colors, including a purple hue called "Purple Night."
Chrome accents adorn the front grille, mirror caps, and window trim, while features such as aluminum pedals, dedicated 17-inch aluminum wheels, and leather steering wheel and shift lever are incorporated. A panoramic glass roof is also available as an option, enhancing the sense of luxury.
At the Geneva Motor Show in March, the engine was announced as a 4-cylinder 1.6-liter diesel turbo engine, the "e-HDi," so it is presumed that the production model will feature this engine. The 1.6-liter "e-HDi" engine is equipped with an idling stop function and an "ultra-capacitor" that restarts the high-compression diesel engine in just 0.4 seconds. It produces a maximum output of 115 ps and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. CO2 emissions are 99 g/km.
