Unchanged for 33 Years

At the press day of the Beijing Motor Show, the G-Class took center stage at the Mercedes-Benz exhibit. While its presence at recent shows has certainly grown, it's unusual for it to be placed on the main stage.

This is because the G-Class, commonly known as "GELANDEWAGEN," has maintained virtually the same appearance since its release in 1979. In fact, its old-school aesthetic could even be perceived as contrary to the image of an evolving brand.

However, its popularity is high not only in Japan but also in North America and China. It seems a few subtle enhancements have been made, leading to this unveiling.



The exterior remains largely unchanged. Recent modifications include a redesigned grille, LED daytime running lights, and new mirrors. They refer to this rugged, enduring styling as "Timeless Design."

Inside, the dashboard has been updated. The instrument cluster now features an LCD panel, and a color display has been integrated into the center console. The seats have also been redesigned.

Body styles include the short-wheelbase Cabrio and the long-wheelbase station wagon. The engine options are a 3-liter V6 diesel for the G350 BlueTEC and a 5.5-liter V8 gasoline unit for the G500. Both deliver a powerful torque exceeding 500 Nm. Both are paired with the 7G-TRONIC transmission.

Furthermore, monstrous AMG versions, the G63 AMG with 544ps and the G65 AMG with 612ps, are also offered. Their specifications, which surpass the norms for SUVs, are sure to excite onlookers.
