Italdesign Giugiaro Unveils Hybrid Sports Car

Italdesign Giugiaro, founded in 1968 by industrial designer Giorgetto Giugiaro—who served as chief stylist for Italian coachbuilder Bertone and is known for designing the Isuzu 117 Coupe—and integrated into the Volkswagen Group in May 2010, unveiled the concept cars "Brivido" and "up! Azzurra Sailing Team."

More Than Just a Dream Car

The red car, named "Brivido," is a four-seater plug-in hybrid concept car boasting a 0-100 km/h acceleration of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 275 km/h, powered by a 3000cc supercharged V6 engine provided by Volkswagen.

According to Giorgetto Giugiaro, founder of Italdesign Giugiaro, this is a dream car that transcends mere fantasy. It is ecological, high-performance, capable of carrying four people and luggage, offers a comfortable ride, and embodies a futuristic vision in both design and technology. Furthermore, despite being a concept model, it is designed for efficient production and market deployment, with the exception of its gullwing doors.

The lightweight body, primarily constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber, features extensive use of glass, promising a wide field of vision for rear passengers. The LED headlights are integrated into the bonnet, serving as a design element. At the rear, a spoiler extends upwards according to speed. The side view is notable for the absence of side mirrors; instead, cameras retract into the body when parked, displaying their feed on a monitor beside the steering wheel. It also syncs with an iPad, which has a dedicated storage space on the passenger side.

An "up!" for the Marina

A GT racing version of the Brivido, developed in collaboration with Martini Racing, was also exhibited. This model features design modifications for enhanced aerodynamics, notably a larger spoiler.

The other concept, the "up! Azzurra Sailing Team," is based on the Volkswagen "up!" and designed for marina use. With its doors and roof removed, it offers an open-air driving experience akin to being on a boat.
