Modernizing the Allroad: A New Generation Based on the A6 Avant

The new A6 Allroad, now in its third generation, is a model whose announcement in Japan is still fresh in our minds.A6 AvantIt is a crossover model based on the , and it is a luxurious model that incorporates almost all of the technologies that are now standard in Audi's new vehicle lineup.

For example, starting with the active use of aluminum, weight reduction technology "Audi ultra," achieved through a combination of advanced materials, has resulted in a weight reduction of 70 kg compared to the previous generation. This contributes to improved fuel efficiency.

Optional LED headlights and taillights are available, as are "Xenon plus headlights" and "adaptive lights" that ensure wide visibility even in bad weather or darkness. In addition, the car is equipped with familiar Audi features such as the "Audi quattro" all-wheel-drive system for enhanced stability, a head-up display, night vision, network connectivity functions collectively called "Audi connect," and the "MMI" infotainment system including touchpad input. As the "Allroad" name suggests, it is perfectly suited for a vehicle that demands high adaptability to all environments, including off-road capabilities.

The body dimensions are 4.94m in length, 1.90m in width, and 1.47m in height. Apart from the height being about 6cm greater, the dimensions are almost identical to the A6 Avant. Visually, the A6 Allroad differs from the A6 Avant with a stepped line along the sides, flared fenders, a front grille with vertical lines, stainless steel underbody protection covers, raised roof rails, and flat dual exhaust pipes. All these elements emphasize its off-road capability.

The suspension can lower the vehicle by 15mm at high speeds and can be raised by 35mm via a button, with an additional 10mm lift possible at low speeds. The tires are 235/55 size, and it comes standard with 18-inch five-spoke wheels. 19-inch and 20-inch wheels are available as options.

Four V6 Engines

There are four engine options: one gasoline and three diesel. All are 3.0-liter V6 units, employing technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging, start-stop function, and thermal management, achieving a 20% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to the previous generation.

The sole gasoline engine, the 3.0-liter TFSI, produces a maximum output of 228 kW and a peak torque of 440 Nm. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is 8.9 L/100 km.

The diesel engines, with different tuning, offer maximum outputs of 150 kW, 180 kW, and 230 kW, with peak torques of 450 Nm, 580 Nm, and 650 Nm, respectively. The 180 kW model, which has the highest environmental performance, is scheduled for a later release. The top-performance 230 kW model accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. This model is equipped with an 8-speed S tronic transmission, while the other models use a 7-speed S tronic. The entry-level 150 kW model achieves fuel consumption of 6.1 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km.

Sales in Germany are set to begin in spring 2012, with the 3.0 TDI model producing 150 kW priced at 54,600 Euros.
