Arriving to Reign Supreme in the SUV Segment

“A vehicle that can be enjoyed equally when attending the opera, spending time on the beach, or driving in the overtaking lane of the Autobahn.” This is how Bentley describes its four-wheel-drive luxury SUV concept, the EXP 9 F, making its debut at the Geneva International Motor Show.

According to Bentley, the EXP 9 F has the potential to become the third model line, following the Mulsanne and Continental series. This means Bentley will enter the luxury SUV market, currently dominated by models like the Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne, with the EXP 9 F. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley's Chairman and CEO, expressed his confidence in the vehicle, stating, “We know that many of our customers already own SUVs and highly value their design, luxury, performance, and versatility. We believe that the EXP 9 F will demonstrate that Bentley possesses the technology and passion to fully meet the expectations of these customers.”

While the body dimensions have not yet been announced, the front design, featuring Bentley’s signature muscular grille and twin round headlamps, along with the sculpted and refined lines of the body sides, create a commanding image befitting a Bentley SUV. The form, which elegantly accommodates large 23-inch wheels, suggests a considerable presence.

The interior, described as combining “luxury with practicality,” is a space where Bentley's unique craftsmanship breathes, composed of wood panels, leather, and polished aluminum and bronze. Yet, it also incorporates cutting-edge technology, such as a touchscreen on the instrument panel.

Production Decision Hinges on Market Reaction

Bentley is known for its driver-focused cars, but it has not overlooked the comfort of rear passengers. The rear seats recline to reveal an electric footrest and a drinks table, and an infotainment screen allows for movie viewing. The seating configuration is 4+1, with a cooler box for champagne and glasses located beneath the rear armrest. When the rear seats are not in use, they can be moved forward electrically to expand the luggage space.

Developed with the aim to “reign supreme in the SUV segment and set a new benchmark for SUV vehicles,” the EXP 9 F boasts a powerful powertrain. The familiar 6.0-liter W12 twin-turbocharged engine has been enhanced from the Continental series, producing a maximum output of 600 bhp and 1000 Nm of torque. Although precise figures have not been released, it is expected to surpass its rivals in key performance metrics such as top speed and 0-100 km/h acceleration.

After unveiling the EXP 9 F at the Geneva Motor Show, Bentley will carefully listen to market feedback and, while refining the concept further, decide on production. Regardless, once the vehicle debuts, it is sure to become a major talking point in the luxury SUV market.
