The M6 Finally Arrives
BMW's luxury coupe,6 Seriesbased on the, the high-performance "BMW M6" developed by BMW M, will finally be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. First, the "Coupe" will be revealed, with the "Convertible" expected to appear at the New York Auto Show in April.
Both the Coupe and Convertible will be powered by the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine already used in the BMW M5. While downsizing from the 5.0-liter V10 engine used in the previous M6, which ceased production last year, it achieves a maximum output of 560 ps (412 kW) at 6000-7000 rpm, an increase of 53 ps, and a maximum torque of 680 Nm at 1500 rpm, an increase of 160 Nm. The 0-100 km/h acceleration is 4.2 seconds, compared to 4.6 seconds for the previous model. The convertible model is only 0.1 second slower than the coupe at 4.3 seconds.
The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h as standard. With the optional M Driver's Package, it can reach 305 km/h. Fuel consumption for the coupe is 9.9 L/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 232 g/km. For the convertible, fuel consumption is 10.3 L/100 km, and CO2 emissions are 239 g/km.
Incidentally, for weight reduction purposes, the coupe's roof is made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer, and the doors and hood are made of aluminum. The convertible retains the soft top, which can be opened and closed in 19 seconds, even at speeds up to 40 km/h.
Further Refined Suspension
With an aggressive image, including a large front spoiler, the new M6 comes standard with 19-inch wheels. The tire width is 0.5 inches wider than the M5, with 265/40R19 at the front and 295/35R19 at the rear. The brakes are large, 15.7 inches at the front and 15.6 inches at the rear, with blue calipers, similar to the M5. Optional 20-inch wheels are available, and when combined with carbon-ceramic brakes, the discs are 16.1 inches at the front and 15.6 inches at the rear. When this brake option is selected, which reduces overall weight by 19.4 kg, the caliper color is gold.
The interior uses thick, supple Merino leather produced in southern Germany. High-tech features include a Head-Up Display that projects vehicle and navigation information onto the windshield, High Beam Assistant that automatically detects oncoming vehicles and switches between high and low beams, and BMW Night Vision with infrared technology for enhanced night vision. Standard equipment also includes Lane Departure Warning that vibrates to alert the driver of lane departure, a rearview camera, and an infotainment system with internet connectivity that includes Facebook and Twitter apps.
