Modern "Hachi-Roku" Set for Spring Release!

On November 27th, Toyota held the "TOYOTA GAZOO Racing FESTIVAL 2011" at Fuji Speedway. Concept: "Intuitive Handling FR"

The "FT-86 concept," unveiled at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show in 2009, generated significant excitement. As its name suggests, it aimed to revive the spirit of the AE86 (Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno) – the legendary car that captivated young people in the 1980s, affectionately known as the "Hachi-Roku" – with modern technology.

Toyota and Subaru have jointly developed this car with the concept of "Intuitive Handling FR," allowing drivers to feel a sense of connection and the joy of controlling the vehicle with just their instincts. Their shared aspiration was to "deliver the dreams and enjoyment of cars to our customers." Now, the production model has been unveiled.

Subaru-Made 2.0-Liter Boxer 4-Cylinder + D-4S Newly Developed Engine

In terms of dimensions, the car features a compact and lightweight FR platform with a body size of 4,240mm (length) x 1,775mm (width) x 1,300mm (height) and a wheelbase of 2,570mm. Toyota describes it as "the world's smallest size for a mass-produced four-seater sports car."

The powertrain utilizes a Subaru-made 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine as its base, enhanced with Toyota's latest "D-4S" direct injection technology. By positioning this engine in a front-midship layout, the car achieves an ultra-low center of gravity and reduced inertia. It also boasts the lowest hip point among Toyota's production vehicles.

This D-4S technology employs twin injectors that alternate between direct and port injection, achieving a high compression ratio of 12.5. It delivers high output and torque across a wide range of RPMs while also achieving excellent environmental performance. The maximum output is 200ps at 7,000rpm, and the maximum torque is 205Nm at 6,600rpm, both demonstrating ample performance at high RPMs. The transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

Design: Functional Yet Beautiful

The design theme for both the interior and exterior is "NEO FUNCTIONALISM." Based on a low-gravity package and aerodynamic performance, the car features an emotional exterior that conveys the joy of driving at first glance. The sharp front fascia is characterized by headlamps called "Keen Look," expressing a "predatory gaze." The side profile incorporates a modern interpretation of the side window graphics and rear fender, inspired by the heritage of Toyota sports cars. The rear fascia pursues a wide, stable stance and a sense of agility.

The interior features Toyota's smallest-ever 365mm diameter true-circle steering wheel. The front seats are designed to support the body uniformly, withstanding lateral and longitudinal G-forces during spirited driving. They are also shaped to avoid interference with shifting operations.

Furthermore, the rear seats can be folded down to expand the luggage space, which can accommodate four sports tires or two golf bags.

This car will be exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show, with sales scheduled to begin in the spring of 2012.
