Evolving into Sports Cars with Distinct Tastes: Test Drive of the New Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ (Prototype)
What are the Differences in Driving Feel Between the 86 and BRZ?
Development initially proceeded under Subaru's leadership. "We consistently aimed for a car that offers stable handling and allows drivers to feel secure even on snowy roads," explained Masahiko Inoue of Subaru.
Interestingly, TOYOTA GR, which initially left development to Subaru, revised its concept midway. "We consciously aimed for a car that allows drivers to actively enjoy cornering," said Fujiwara of GR (TOYOTA GAZOO Racing).
The difference between the two companies becomes apparent when driving. The Subaru BRZ maintains a consistently stable posture, with the car moving exactly as the steering wheel is turned. "We aimed for a 1:1 response," you realize this is what the aforementioned Mr. Hayashi meant.
On the other hand, the Toyota GR86 has better torque response when the accelerator pedal is pressed. In other words, it accelerates energetically with a light press. In fact, the throttle valve, the component responsible for acceleration, differs between the two.
The car feels more agile when cornering. The speed at which the car changes direction when the steering wheel is turned is particularly noticeable.
We were told that the difference lies in the suspension. The spring rates of the front suspension system differ, and the structure of the subframe that mounts the rear suspension system is also different.
The reason for these differences seems to stem from comments made by Mr. "Morizo" (Akio Toyoda, President and CEO) of Toyota Motor, who drove the prototype and remarked that it could be made even more enjoyable.
"That being said, the final performance of both the 86 and BRZ reaches the same level. The difference lies in the tuning of the process," both companies' developers stated simultaneously.
There are two types of transmissions: manual and automatic. The release order appears to be the automatic Subaru BRZ first, followed by the manual. The Toyota 86 will be released later. If you are buying this car to enjoy driving, I would definitely recommend the manual transmission, as the gear ratios are close and the shifting is enjoyable.
