Test drive the Nissan X-Trail—a hybrid SUV adept at cornering | NISSAN
Sporty Handling with "e-4ORCE"
The model I drove was the top-tier 5-seater equipped with "e-4ORCE." The test drive course was in Nagatoro, Saitama Prefecture. Nissan Motor Corporation specifically chose this location, featuring narrow, winding roads along a mountain stream.

There is also a highway nearby. Therefore, I first experienced the VC-Turbo at high speeds and then tested the cornering capabilities of "e-4ORCE" on winding roads.
Regarding cornering performance, I was immediately impressed on the curve entering the highway. I deliberately took it at a higher speed, but as Nissan claims, it did not drift outwards and smoothly navigated the turn. The developer's comment, "We believe you'll feel like a better driver," might not be an exaggeration.

When cornering, if the "e-4ORCE" system determines that the speed is too high and the vehicle is about to drift outwards, it activates. It applies the brake to the inner wheel and simultaneously distributes more power to the outer wheel, thereby correcting the cornering line.
Even on roads with連続する (renzoku suru - continuous) tight curves, it navigates them nimbly. Moreover, the acceleration out of corners is swift, thanks to the abundant torque from the electric motor. It turns smoothly and quickly accelerates towards the next curve. This repeated action even conveyed a sporty atmosphere.

"We have revamped the platform and introduced new powertrains. The electronic control steering system has also been tuned with the goal of enabling smooth cornering. By leveraging Nissan's accumulated expertise in electric vehicles, we aim to create an optimal value for success in the global market."
Hiroyuki Tomigashi, who was responsible for the development of the X-TRAIL's "e-4ORCE" and its handling and ride comfort, spoke about the development background.

The "AUTECH" specification, which I test-drove concurrently and features sporty interior and exterior design, was equipped with 20-inch Michelin Primacy 4 tires (255/45), whereas the standard model comes with Hankook tires. The steering feel was more distinct, further enhancing the X-TRAIL's strengths.
