Experience the pure joy of driving a sports hatchback

We test drove the "S3 Sportback," a sporty model that went on sale in Japan in May 2021, alongside the Audi A3, Audi's premium compact car. How has it evolved?

If you're looking for a car that's fun to drive without being too large, the new Audi S3 Sportback is a great choice. Its styling is subtly edgy, making it recommendable for those with a keen sense of style.
The Audi S3 Sportback is positioned above the Audi A3 Sportback, which was released at the same time. While the A3 30 TFSI Sportback features a 999cc 3-cylinder engine (81kW maximum output, 200Nm maximum torque), the S3 is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (228kW, 310Nm). The A3 is front-wheel drive, whereas the S3 features the quattro full-time all-wheel-drive system.
The appeal of the S3 Sportback lies in its manageable 4,350mm length, combined with high levels of handling, ride comfort, and interior quality. It appeals to mature users who value the opposite of the notion that bigger is always better. This is a popular segment in Europe as well.
Audi is a popular brand in Italy, and its sporty "S" models, as well as the "RS" models tuned by Audi Sport, are supported by a wide range of age groups. It wouldn't be surprising if the same happened in Japan.
The car boasts a rigid body that remains silent on any road, an engine that delivers strong torque as the revs climb, and responsive steering – it's a deeply satisfying package.
The S3 comes standard with dedicated sports suspension and progressive steering, which offers a quicker response at the start of a turn. Additionally, the model I tested was equipped with the optional "damping control suspension."
With electronic control dampers, the chassis remains flat regardless of road conditions, allowing the driver to enjoy cornering with confidence. Furthermore, the ride comfort is excellent. This is definitely a worthwhile option.
By keeping the engine revs above 2,000 rpm, you can ascend mountain roads at a brisk pace. Descending is a particular strength, allowing you to navigate downhill with controlled body roll, much like a sports car. This is truly a model that lets you savor the essence of driving a sports hatchback.
