Test drive of the new GR86: Recommended for those who constantly seek exhilaration in their drive | TOYOTA
Suspension designed for "a sense of being one with the car, controllable at the driver's will"
The GR86's rear suspension was actually redesigned after Toyota's master driver requested "a sense of being one with the car, controllable at the driver's will," along with "linear response at the limit and nimble handling," just before its announcement. This level of detail is remarkable.
For example, when cornering. As you turn the steering wheel, which feels heavier than the BRZ's, the car's nose swiftly points towards the inside of the corner. It's not ultra-direct, but I believe its emphasis on ease of control is what makes this car so appealing.
If you're inclined, a wide array of tuning parts are available, making it suitable for those who want to race on circuits or customize the car to their liking. The manufacturer clearly understands that this is the true joy of owning a sports car.
The price is also attractive, starting from 2,799,000 yen. By creating fun cars at an accessible price point, both Toyota Motor Corporation and SUBARU are contributing to car culture, which is truly admirable.
The GR86 offers a more straightforward sportiness than the Subaru BRZ. For those who constantly seek exhilaration in their drive, the GR86 might be the better choice.
Unfortunately, the engine sound isn't particularly pleasing, and the interior feels a bit too utilitarian, detracting from its overall perfection. While the sports seats and other elements are well-made, I wonder if the overall atmosphere will resonate with adult users accustomed to imported cars. It feels somewhat uncertain.
While it is a 2+2 seater, riding in the rear seats, like in a Ferrari Portofino, would be impossible for adults. However, you can place luggage there. It should also be suitable for weekend drives for two, so the interior's quality is important. I feel it's a shame because the car is so well-made that it could be recommended to a wider range of car enthusiasts.
