Test drive the new Lexus NX, the first model of the next-generation Lexus

The new NX, a mid-size SUV, marks the debut of the next-generation Lexus. Its full model change was driven by the goals of electrification and catering to users with diverse lifestyles. To achieve this, it launched with a comprehensive lineup, including Lexus's first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HV) models, alongside 2.4-liter turbo and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine options. We participated in a test drive event near the Venus Line in Nagano Prefecture to assess the extent of the new model's evolution.

Lexus's Noteworthy PHEV Model, the NX450h+, Spearheading Electrification

At Toyota's recent press conference on electrification, the unveiling of 16 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) models astonished us. However, PHEVs are arguably the most practical electric models available today. The top-tier model of the new NX is a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid), designated as the "450h+" grade.
The powertrain features an electric four-wheel-drive E-Four system, with a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine producing 185 ps and 228 Nm driving the front wheels via a 182 ps and 270 Nm motor, and a 54 ps and 121 Nm rear motor driving the rear wheels. While the system is largely identical to that of the Toyota RAV4, sharing the "GA-K" platform, the maximum output has been increased by 3 ps to 309 ps.
The lithium-ion battery, with a capacity of 51 Ah and 18.1 kWh, provides an EV range of 88 km on a full charge. To preserve battery life, it does not support rapid charging and only allows for standard charging. A full charge takes five and a half hours at 200V/16A or 33 hours at 100V/16A. The charging port can also supply power externally via an AC external power supply system; a camping setup utilizing this feature was displayed in the hotel courtyard at the test drive venue.
Driving in the default EV mode, it offers a quiet and refined ride with the torque-rich acceleration characteristic of BEVs. The torque from the rear motor is also effectively transmitted, providing exhilarating acceleration that lasts over long distances. By selecting the AUTO EV/HV mode via the console button, the engine power is utilized in conjunction with the electric motor for maximum output, allowing for effortless climbing even on steep inclines like the Venus Line.
After experiencing the "Version L" in Sonic Chrome, we had the opportunity to drive the sporty "450h+ F Sport." This model features a Heat Blue Contrast Layering body color and exclusive sport-type two-tone seats. The suspension is equipped with dedicated performance dampers, making drives on winding roads even more enjoyable. Even when selecting sport-oriented modes, the AVS suspension, with MacPherson struts at the front and trailing arm double wishbones at the rear, maintains a flat body posture during cornering without feeling unsettled.
