Test drive of the Ferrari 296 GTS in Italy — A car that lets you savor the pure joy of driving to the fullest | Ferrari

Comfortable EV Driving Possible on the Autostrada

The test drive route covers approximately 250 km from Forte dei Marmi to Maranello, where Ferrari's headquarters are located. The route includes the historic winding roads of Passo del Giogo and Passo della Collina, also known as stages for the classic car race 'Mille Miglia.' These are places with a strong connection to Ferrari, which won the Mille Miglia six times. It's also a fitting course for driving the latest model.

In addition to the traditional Manettino, the 296 GTS is equipped with an 'eManettino' to switch the PHEV's power management modes. Similar to the Manettino, four modes can be selected using switches integrated into the steering wheel.
'eDrive' is the EV mode, running solely on electric power. With a fully charged battery, the range is 25 km, and the maximum speed reaches 135 km/h. 'Hybrid' is the conventional hybrid mode, controlling the engine and motor to maximize power flow efficiency. 'Performance' is optimized for aggressive driving, keeping the engine constantly running to maintain battery charge and ensure full power is always available. Finally, 'Qualify' mode minimizes battery charging to deliver maximum performance.

Upon starting, the car automatically selects Hybrid mode. Pulling the right paddle shifter to downshift to first gear and pressing the accelerator pedal, the 296 GTS glides silently on electric power. Cruising through the quiet, off-season resort in an 830 cv supercar without disturbing the peace felt almost too refined. It's a scene where the benefits of a PHEV can truly be appreciated.
On the autostrada, cruising at around 120 km/h to match the flow of traffic, the engine still remains off. Thanks to the glass rear screen separating the cabin from the rear deck, wind noise is minimal at this speed. It's incredibly quiet and comfortable, offering an easy highway cruise that makes it hard to believe you're driving a Ferrari. This truly signifies Ferrari's entry into a new era.

Accelerating to around the autostrada's speed limit of 130 km/h, the V6 unit awakens as if it's been waiting. The engine and motor are coordinated by the Transition Manager Actuator (TMA). In Hybrid mode, the engine cycles on and off depending on the battery charge and powertrain load. The control is incredibly precise and smooth, and it's remarkable how it never makes the driver feel any discomfort.
