Audi e-tron GT Makes its Japan Premiere
Audi Japan announced on April 6 that the Audi "e-tron GT," which had its world premiere in February, would be unveiled online and exhibited at the "Audi House of Progress Tokyo" in Aoyama, Tokyo, until May 31 (Monday).
Equipped with Electric quattro, Reacting Five Times Faster Than Mechanical quattro
The e-tron GT quattro and its high-performance RS e-tron GT variant have been developed as electric four-door grand tourers, combining emotional design, powerful drive systems, and excellent ride comfort and cabin space for long-distance travel, along with dynamic handling. These models are set to become Audi's new brand icons for a sustainable future.
The powerful wide and low body measures 4,990mm in length, 1,965mm in width, and 1,415mm (1,395mm for the RS) in height. The exterior features signature Audi details such as the hexagonal Singleframe grille and quattro blister fenders. The headlights can be specified as Matrix LED with laser light, and the body panels and lines, including the large rear diffuser, harmonize beautifully with exceptional manufacturing precision. The smooth body lines achieve a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.24.
The interior features a sporty, low-set driver's position and a monoposto design with a wide center console, creating a cockpit-like embrace for the driver. The leather-free package, utilizing recycled materials such as plastic bottles and fishing nets, offers a blend of high-tech aesthetics and organic naturalness, evoking a sense of next-generation premium. The long wheelbase of 2,900mm ensures ample space for two adults to relax in the rear seats. The luggage compartment offers a capacity of 405 liters (350 liters for the RS model).
The control and connectivity suite includes standard Audi Virtual Cockpit (12.3-inch) and a large center console touchscreen (10.1-inch). It also comes standard with MMI Navigation plus, featuring online voice search, personalization functions, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, offering a wide range of Audi connect services. Additionally, it is equipped with an e-tron route planner to calculate the fastest route with the shortest charging time using fast-charging stations. Wireless charging (Qi standard) and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system are also available as options.
Regarding the powertrains of the e-tron GT quattro and RS e-tron GT, the system's maximum output from the two electric motors, located on the front and rear axles, is 350 kW and 440 kW respectively (390 kW and 475 kW with launch control), with maximum torque figures of 640 Nm and 830 Nm. To fully leverage this performance, they are equipped with Electric quattro, a fully electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Its reaction speed is an astonishing 30 milliseconds, five times faster than mechanical quattro.
With launch control, the RS e-tron GT achieves 0-100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds. The total capacity of the 93 kWh battery (84 kWh usable capacity), which is the source of its power, is located beneath the floor. With a system voltage of 800V, it achieves a range of over 500 km according to Japanese measurement standards (WLTC).
Prices: e-tron GT quattro ¥13.99 million, RS e-tron GT ¥17.99 million
The chassis features a 3-chamber air suspension (standard on RS) and all-wheel steering (optional), balancing sporty driving with a comfortable ride. The e-tron GT quattro comes standard with 19-inch wheels, while the RS e-tron GT has 20-inch wheels, with 20-inch and 21-inch wheel options available respectively.
Standard driver assistance systems include the Audi pre sense safety system, adaptive cruise control, side assist, rear cross-traffic assist, turn assist, and emergency assist.
Additionally, the e-tron GT features a unique e-tron sport sound, an electronically synthesized sound. In addition to the artificial sound required by law for speeds below 20 km/h and during parking, it generates sound both inside and outside the vehicle according to the Audi drive select settings (planned as an optional feature for both e-tron GT quattro and RS e-tron GT).
For charging, the e-tron GT supports up to 8 kW for standard 200V charging and up to 150 kW for rapid charging (CHAdeMO). With the Audi e-tron charge card, customers can charge for free for the first year at over 20,000 charging stations within the e-Mobility Power network (formerly NCS network) nationwide.
Production takes place at the Böllinger Höfe plant in Neckarsulm using carbon-neutral methods. Sharing an assembly line with the Audi R8, it combines automated production technologies with the craftsmanship of skilled workers to achieve Audi's renowned quality.
The planned launch in Japan is scheduled for autumn 2021, with prices set at ¥13.99 million for the e-tron GT quattro and ¥17.99 million for the RS e-tron GT (both including tax). Details for the Japanese specifications will be announced after obtaining approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
