OPENERS CAR Selection 2014: Tatsuya Kuishima Edition

As 2014 draws to a close and the next year comes into view, we take a moment for a considered look back with the "OPENERS Selection 2014." From the many cars that debuted last year, here are the models that caught Tatsuya Kuishima's eye.

Diverse Power Sources, Enhanced Electronic Devices

The automotive industry in 2014 was remarkably diverse. The shift in power sources accelerated further, with each manufacturer appearing to have stepped onto the next stage.

BMW's sub-brand "i" stood out. The launch of the all-electric "i3" and the plug-in hybrid "i8" was spectacular, and the international press drive, originating in Los Angeles, was particularly memorable. In a region where hybrid cars like the Tesla and Lexus "RX450h" are prevalent, interest in eco-cars is high. And what's more, this car boasts supercar styling. It's simply unparalleled. I was approached by locals at every traffic light.

The proliferation of diesel engine cars was also notable. BMW's "3 Series" and Mazda's "Skyactiv-D" gained further traction and popularity. In a more niche segment, the Alpina "D3" with its 3-liter diesel turbo left a lasting impression. I was impressed by how naturally they handled diesel power.

Furthermore, the downsizing of high-efficiency gasoline engines is not to be overlooked. Manufacturers like Volvo, Jaguar, and Land Rover have been particularly proactive in developing and producing these engines in-house. While this may seem like a minor trend, considering the scale of investment, it will likely be a crucial factor in predicting future developments.

And then, at the end of the year, came the Toyota "Mirai" hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Well, regarding this, I can't comment definitively without observing its trajectory in 2015.

Beyond power sources, there was a significant enhancement of electronic devices aimed at autonomous driving. With features like auto-braking, lane-keeping assist, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), and parking assist systems, these cars are becoming remarkably capable. The day when drivers can reach their destination without touching the steering wheel is not far off..

From these developments, we've selected five cars, incorporating personal preferences in our choices.

Tatsuya Kuishima's Top 5 Recommended Cars for OPENERS Readers in 2014

BMW i8

BMW i8

One might expect a challenging vehicle given its styling, but it actually promises a comfortable drive. While ingress and egress, particularly with the scissor doors, require a slight adjustment period, once underway, it drives like any conventional car. However, the initial acceleration using the electric motor is distinctly different from a gasoline engine – a sensation unique to EVs, thanks to its immense torque. I particularly enjoyed the engine sound; while not audible outside, the driver is treated to a satisfying acceleration note. Such thoughtful touches are delightful. Above all, with its excellent fuel economy and striking design, there's nothing to fault.

Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S

Although pre-orders began in 2013, we had the opportunity to test drive it last year, making it our pick for 2014. This car is extraordinary in many ways. For instance, its range is approximately 500 km, more than double that of the Leaf's 160 km. It can travel from Tokyo to Osaka on a single charge. And then there's the styling. While not a supercar in the vein of the BMW i8, Ferrari, or Lamborghini, it evokes the elegance of an Aston Martin or Porsche Panamera. It's so cool it makes you look twice. Peer inside, and you'll be astonished by the monitor – two iPads' worth of screen dominating the dashboard. I've never seen anything like it!

Mercedes-Benz C Class

Mercedes-Benz C Class

As Mercedes' bread-and-butter model, it embodies all their technological prowess. It's astonishing that most of the electronic devices introduced in the previous year's "S Class" are incorporated here. One wonders if it's economically viable. And the drive? Recent Mercedes models have focused on driving dynamics, and this car is no exception, offering a decidedly aggressive performance. Its cornering ability on winding roads is exceptional, captivating the driver. The steering is surprisingly quick and agile, emphasizing its nimbleness. The handling is also superb; the rear suspension's tenacity makes you feel like a more skilled driver. Truly remarkable!

Nissan Skyline

Nissan Skyline

Among four-door sedans, this car boasts a handsome design. The interplay of its flowing surfaces and sharp edges is masterfully executed. The high quality in this regard is likely related to its sale in North America as the "Infiniti." The level of refinement is exceptionally high. Furthermore, both the hybrid and the 2-liter inline-4 turbo powertrains are excellent. The latter, developed by Mercedes, integrates surprisingly well. While the Direct Adaptive Steering (steer-by-wire) still has room for improvement in terms of feel, the introduction of such new technology is commendable.

Lexus NX

Lexus NX

This SUV offers the sharp, responsive driving characteristic of the new generation Lexus. It features a bold handling setup that might seem slightly too quick for the American market. The styling is also eye-catching. While I initially thought it might be "too much" when I saw it on the turntable at the Beijing Motor Show, the sense of sporty cohesion was strong during the test drive in Vancouver. The attention to detail is also excellent. The LED lighting, front and rear, is exquisite, reflecting a cost comparable to a class above. It clearly demonstrates the manufacturer's dedication.
