Our drive from Hakone to West Izu was in the SLK 350, powered by a 3.5-liter V6. With a compact body measuring 4,110mm long and 1,810mm wide, fitting for a two-seater roadster, this V6 engine delivers a formidable 305ps at 6,500rpm and 36.7kgm of torque at 4,900rpm – more than ample power. It represents a core power unit in the current Mercedes-Benz lineup.

The combination of a highly rigid chassis, supple suspension, and a torquey powertrain creates a world that can only be described as beautiful. Particularly from around 4,000rpm, the engine enters its peak power band, where the SLK 350 truly shines as a sports car. Acceleration and deceleration respond instantaneously to the slightest input from the accelerator pedal, fostering a strong sense of unity between driver and machine. This is supported by the new Direct Steering system, which controls the front wheel angle based on steering wheel input and speed. During spirited driving, even slight turns of the wheel elicit an agile response from the car.
