Feature: Volvo V40
The Volvo "V40" entered the premium compact segment. For this feature, OPENERS tested the base model "V40," the sporty "V40 T5 R-DESIGN," and the all-wheel-drive "V40 Cross Country T5 AWD." We also spoke with Håkan Abrahamsson, Volvo's Director of Passenger Cars, about the value Volvo brings to us, and with designer Simon Lamarre about the philosophy behind its design.
First Test Drive of the Volvo V40
Though named V40, this new model, which has transformed into a hatchback, is essentially a completely new car, distinct from previous models. Yasuhisa Shimoshita test drove this model, which debuted at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.
Test Drive: Volvo V40
Launched in Japan in February 2013 with comprehensive safety features and strategic pricing, the Volvo "V40." Among the European compact hatchbacks arriving in Japan, what is Volvo's unique appeal?
Test Drive: Volvo V40 T5 R-DESIGN
The "V40 T5 R-DESIGN" emphasizes the V40's sportiness, equipped with a 2-liter, 5-cylinder turbo engine producing a maximum output of 213ps, and featuring modifications to the interior, exterior, and suspension. However, this car possesses a worldview that cannot be simply categorized as a sports version.
Test Drive: Volvo V40 Cross Country
With the arrival of the all-wheel-drive "V40" and "V40 Cross Country," the V40 family is now complete in Japan. We tested the robust V40, featuring an SUV-like appearance and the T5 engine.
Volvo's Essential Value
Håkan Abrahamsson, Director of Volvo's Passenger Cars division, visited Japan. We asked him again what kind of value Volvo brings to us as a brand.
