Jaguar XF and XJ Undergo Major Minor Change

The sporty saloon "XF," with its coupe-like silhouette, and the "XJ," Jaguar's flagship four-door model clad in an aluminum body, have both evolved into their 2013 model year versions. This update focuses on refining powertrain performance through the addition of new engines and transmission changes, while also emphasizing environmental efficiency.

Improved Environmental Performance with New Engines and 8-Speed Transmission

This minor change sees a downsizing of the engines. Specifically, as previously reported in our article on the F-Type,Jaguar F-Typethe V6 3-liter supercharged engine producing a maximum output of 340 PS at 6,500 rpm and 450 Nm of torque at 3,550-5,000 rpm, and the 4-cylinder 2-liter turbo engine producing a maximum output of 240 PS at 5,500 rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 2,000-4,000 rpm, have been fitted to both the XJ and XF. These essentially replace the naturally aspirated V6 3-liter and V8 5-liter engines. With the exception of the 5-liter V8 engine grade of the XJ, which will continue to be sold, naturally aspirated engines will be phased out of the lineup.
Similarly, the transmission in the gasoline models, previously a 6-speed automatic, has been unified across all grades to the 8-speed automatic transmission from Germany's ZF, which was previously used in some diesel engine models. This contributes to smoother acceleration and improved fuel economy.

For the new model XJ, which continues to feature the 5-liter V8 engine and has been updated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption has improved from 11.4ℓ/100km in the previous 6-speed automatic model to around 10.4ℓ/100km in the new model, while maintaining the same output and torque figures.

Incidentally, the XF equipped with the most fuel-efficient 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine has a fuel consumption of 8.9ℓ/100km, achieving approximately 11.2 km per liter. The previous XF model with the most fuel-efficient 3-liter V6 engine had a consumption of 10.5ℓ/100km, meaning fuel efficiency has improved by about 15 percent. CO2 emissions are 207g/km, a reduction of about 30 percent compared to the previous model.

Furthermore, excluding models with the 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine, an "Intelligent Stop-Start System" has been adopted, which stops the engine 0.3 seconds after coming to a halt. This eliminates gasoline consumption while stopped at traffic lights, potentially reducing fuel consumption by approximately 5 percent.

Adoption of High-End Audio System

A premium audio system developed by Meridian, a British audio manufacturer that also handles car audio for models like the "McLaren 12C," is now available as an option for all grades of the XF and XJ.

Two audio packages are offered: a 12-channel surround system with a total output of 380W, featuring 11 speakers in the XF and 15 in the XJ; and an upgraded version with a total output of 825W, boasting 17 speakers in the XF and 20 in the XJ, all within a 15-channel surround system.

The navigation system now includes an "ECO Route" mode, which selects and guides you along routes that minimize fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to improved fuel efficiency.

Home Market Lineup Includes Diesel Engine Models

While the gasoline powertrains have been downsized yet maintain high performance, the home market also offers four types of turbo-diesel engines.

The 3-liter V6 engine is available in two versions with the same displacement: one producing 240ps/500Nm and another producing 275ps/600Nm. Both have CO2 emissions of 159g/km and fuel consumption of 6.0ℓ/100km. The 2.2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine also comes in two versions, with maximum outputs of 163ps and 200ps, and maximum torques of 400Nm and 450Nm respectively. Both achieve CO2 emissions of 135g/km and fuel consumption of 5.1ℓ/100km.
