The Audi A6 L e-tron concept is a plug-in hybrid model that combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TFSI engine producing 155 kW (211 ps) with a 70 kW (95 ps) electric motor. It employs a parallel hybrid system, allowing for an electric-only range of up to 80 km at an average speed of 60 km/h. The large, water-cooled lithium-ion battery is housed in the rear of the vehicle.

The A6 L e-tron also features Audi's lightweight construction, known as 'Audi Ultra,' with approximately 10 percent of the body made from aluminum. This results in a 15 percent weight reduction compared to an all-steel construction.

The vehicle measures 5,020 mm in length, 1,870 mm in width, and 1,460 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,010 mm. These dimensions are nearly identical to the Japanese specification A8 (5,145 mm length, 1,950 mm width, 1,465 mm height), except for a narrower width. Its wheelbase is 20 mm longer than the A8's 2,990 mm. This extended wheelbase, combined with features like ventilated and massaging seats and a BOSE surround sound system, creates a comfortable interior space.

The instrument panel replaces the usual tachometer with a 'power meter.' This meter displays the total output of the hybrid system as a percentage from 0 to 100, along with the charge status and the power source currently in use.

Audi's decision to unveil a plug-in hybrid stems from its strong emphasis on CO2 reduction, viewing electric vehicle technology as a key solution. While the company already offers hybrid models in the Q5, A6, and A8 lineups, their purely electric range is limited to about 3 km. These models balance sporty performance with high fuel efficiency through the combined use of internal combustion engines and electric motors.

Following these hybrids is a series of technologies named 'e-tron,' which includes range extenders and plug-in hybrids. The A1 e-tron and A3 e-tron areas we have already reported in our test drive reviewscurrently undergoing public road testing. Audi has announced that the A3 e-tron is scheduled for release within 2014.
