BMW: Driving Forward with the '7' and 'M', alongside PHEVs and EVs

BMW showcases its new "7 Series," recently unveiled in Japan, and the world-premiere high-performance "M4 GTS." The display also features plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles as proposals for a sustainable automotive society, organized by themes including the "i" sub-brand and motorsport's "M."

The Pinnacle of Luxury and the Extreme of Sportiness

Luxurious and sporty. The stars of the BMW booth are the completely redesigned flagship "7 Series" and the ultra-sporty "M4 GTS"M4 GTS." Alongside it, the new "MINI Clubman," which has grown into a premium compact with its larger body, is also on display, offering a delightful experience for car enthusiasts.

The new "7 Series" is almost identical in size to the previous model. Its most significant feature is the elegant style, reminiscent of the "3 Series." In terms of content, key highlights include weight reduction through the extensive use of high-quality materials, enhanced safety features, and improved comfort. Two body types are available: the standard wheelbase (still a considerable 3,070mm) and a long wheelbase version extended by 140mm.

"Expressing style using minimal lines is BMW's approach." Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW's Head of Design, visited Japan for the Tokyo Motor Show's press day to explain the styling highlights of the 7 Series. Even when stationary at the booth, the enlarged kidney grille conveys a sense of power, while the slightly lowered overall height enhances its elongated image. Inside, despite being a large sedan, the driver's seat is particularly appealing, a testament to BMW's commitment as a manufacturer of driver's cars. With the adaptive suspension system and other features, BMW consistently prioritizes "driving dynamics" even in its larger models.

The rear center armrest features touch controls for infotainment and climate control, innovatively designed to be removable like a tablet. The "7 Series" also offers options such as the Executive Lounge with a massage function, and the Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof with lighting. In the Japanese market, the "750i" (and "L") with a V8 engine and the "740i" (and equivalent) with a 3-liter inline-six engine are available. A plug-in hybrid model, combining a 2-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, is also slated for addition in 2016.

For fans of BMW as a sports manufacturer, the M4 GTS, limited to just 700 units worldwide, is a major draw. The "M" division has been achieving strong results, with 45,000 units sold globally in 2014 (a 44% increase from the previous year). The appeal lies in the crossover between daily life and racing, with BMW noting, "It can also be driven on public roads." The M4 GTS is powered by a 3-liter six-cylinder engine, boasting an impressive 348kW and 600Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 305 km/h. It is equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The exterior resembles a race car. With extensive use of carbon fiber, the body weighs just 1.5 tons, contributing to its exceptional handling.

The tires are Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, described by Michelin as "circuit tires that can also be used on public roads." The front tires are 265/35R19, and the rear are 285/30R20. The car features an adjustable rear wing and striking metallic orange accents, making it truly captivating.

Expanding Plug-in Hybrids

Highlighting environmental performance appears to be a major theme for BMW at the Tokyo Motor Show. Leading this initiative is the "i" sub-brand, available in Japan since 2013, which comprises electric vehicles and range-extended models with onboard charging engines. The "i" models continue to capture attention with their distinctive styling, standing out even among electric vehicles.

This year's show notably features a significant expansion of BMW's plug-in hybrid lineup. A substantial area at the motor show venue is dedicated to these vehicles, emphasizing their presence. "Cars with high environmental performance don't have to be boring. We made no compromises," stated Peter Kronschnabl, President of BMW Japan, at a press conference held at the show.

Four models employing BMW's "eDrive" technology were announced for introduction to Japan at the press conference. These include the "330e" from the 3 Series, the "225xe" from the 2 Series Active Tourer, the SUV "X5 xDrive40e", and the "740e" available for the new 7 Series.

In BMW's nomenclature, gasoline models are designated with an "i" after the model number, while diesels use "d." Plug-in hybrid models will now be identified with an "e." These will likely become significant sub-brand names. The PHV models on display were adorned with blue decals featuring the letter "e," and stylish charging stations were placed alongside them. BMW Japan confirmed, "We will introduce these in Japan in 2016."

Alongside diesel engines, fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid vehicles are set to play a crucial role in BMW's Japanese lineup in 2016.
