The Coupe Version of the Aero 8 Finally Enters Production
Founded in 1913 in Malvern, Worcestershire, England, Morgan Motor Company remains a small-volume sports car manufacturer still run by the founding family. The "Aero 8," its first new design since 1936, was exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000. Twelve years later, this year, the same Geneva Motor Show will feature the "Aero Coupe," a production model of the hardtop version of the "Aero 8," which was a limited production run of 100 units between 2008 and 2010. This model features an aluminum body and chassis, powered by a BMW-sourced 4.8-liter V8 engine producing 396ps (290kW). It achieves 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds and weighs under 1,175kg.
The Plus 8: A Nod to Classical Design
The new "Plus 8," also powered by a 4.8-liter V8 engine, achieves a dry weight of just 1,100kg by applying aircraft manufacturing techniques, such as bonding and riveting aluminum. This makes it the lightest V8-powered passenger car meeting European safety standards.
Unlike the "Aero 8" series, it features a classical exterior, but its power-to-weight ratio reaches 333 horsepower per ton, with 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.2 seconds for the 6-speed automatic transmission model and 4.5 seconds for the manual model. In other words,Porsche Panamera GTS(4.5 seconds) andAudi S8(4.2 seconds),Lamborghini L550-2 Spyder(4.2 seconds) offer comparable acceleration.
Furthermore, comfort features have been enhanced, including a dual-layer soft top with a mohair liner, a dashboard finished in premium leather, and standard equipment such as air conditioning and a CD player.
The automatic transmission model offers two drive modes: "Sport" and "Auto." In "Sport" mode, the engine is allowed to rev up to 6,500rpm, and the system blips the throttle during downshifts.
Additionally, while still a rumor, an electric vehicle version of the roadster, based on the "Aero 8" series, is also expected to be announced at Geneva.
