A New Standard for Luxury Roadsters
The "SL-Class" boasts a history of approximately 60 years. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler, stated, "In a world with thousands of car models, few can be called icons. The SL-Class, with its distinct style and uncompromising pursuit of supreme comfort and luxury, is one of them." Mercedes proudly declares that the 2013 SL-Class, its sixth generation, will set a new standard for luxury roadsters.
The biggest highlight of the sixth generation, which is said to further emphasize the "Sporty" and "Lightweight" meanings of "SL," is its lightweight body shell made entirely of aluminum. Previously, when using aluminum in the body, magnesium was used for the hood and roof, and steel for the A-pillars to ensure rigidity. However, by completely revamping the forming method, a robust body made entirely of aluminum has been achieved. As a result, compared to the previous model which primarily used steel, an astonishing weight reduction of 275 pounds (approximately 125 kg) has been realized.
Delivers 429 hp Despite 0.8-Liter Downsizing
The suspension system offers two options: the standard Agility Control suspension and the optional ABC (Active Body Control). These are combined with the new generation of Direct Steer, a variable-ratio steering system developed based on speed-sensitive power steering.
Regarding the engine, the 4.6-liter V8 fitted in the SL550 has been downsized by 0.8 liters compared to the previous generation, yet it delivers an astonishing 429 hp and a 32 percent increase in maximum torque. Paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission, it achieves 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.5 seconds. Notably, the engine auto start/stop function is standard equipment.
The exterior design adheres to the classic sports car proportions of a long hood and short rear end. It features a powerful front face with large bi-xenon headlights incorporating active curve illumination, and a sculpted side profile, giving it a more muscular impression than before.
Sales Begin Next Spring, Starting in the US!
As mentioned above, the new SL-Class is significantly lighter, yet its body dimensions have increased by 1.97 inches (approximately 5 cm) in length and 2.24 inches (approximately 5.7 cm) in width. This expansion provides a more spacious interior, creating a more comfortable environment.
The interior, lavishly appointed with leather, features a cockpit-like design that envelops the occupants, similar to the SLS and the latest SLK. The wood trim, extending from the center console to the dashboard and doors, is available in two types. Furthermore, the retractable hardtop of the new SL-Class is equipped with the Magic Sky Control function, adopted from the latest SLK-Class.
This new SL-Class is scheduled to go on sale next spring, beginning in the United States. Currently announced models include the SL 550 and the "SL 550 Edition 1," which is based on the same vehicle and features AMG 19-inch alloy wheels, an interior with Designo exclusive leather, and a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system. Pricing has not yet been disclosed.
