Where to Find Three Times the Value of an iQ?
The Aston Martin Cygnet is the company's first compact car, and its price has been a subject of considerable anticipation. The details announced this time pertain to the pricing and some aspects of the model that will be available at launch.
First, there is a special edition model that will be released in April. Dubbed the "Launch Edition," it will be available in two body colors: white and black. As previously reported, a 6-speed manual transmission will be standard, with a CVT available as an option. The engine is the same 1.33-liter Dual VVT-i engine found in the currentToyota iQ, producing 72kW (98ps) and 123Nm (12.5kgm), with a target CO2 emission of 120g/km.
While the Launch Edition is offered only in white and black, the paintwork appears to be exceptionally elaborate. The white, named "Snow White," is a relatively subdued body color, featuring a silver mesh stripe that runs from the center of the front fascia towards the tail. It is fitted with matching white alloy wheels. The interior combines hand-stitched pearl white leather with perforated satin chrome Alcantara.
In contrast, the black, named "Magic Black," is said to have a deep-sea hue with a greenish tint. The stripe is matte black, the wheels are finished in dark chrome, and the interior is unified in a sophisticated black finish.
Furthermore, the Launch Edition includes a set of bags specially designed for the Cygnet by Bill Amberg. Made from a combination of black leather and synthetic fibers, the set comprises five pieces: a glove box bag, removable door pocket bags, a holdall, a garment bag, and a foldable tote bag.
Equipment includes ABS, 9 airbags, stability control, and brake assist, along with power-folding mirrors, a keyless entry and start system, and a navigation system.
The much-anticipated price has been announced at £39,995 (approximately ¥4.1 million). In the UK, this price point is comparable to D-segment cars such as the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and Audi A4, and is £21,000 (approximately ¥2.78 million) higher than the base Toyota iQ. In other words, it is three times more expensive than the base vehicle. The success of the Cygnet will likely hinge on whether customers can perceive the value in the Aston Martin brand, its engineering prowess, and the quality of its interior and exterior appointments.
The Cygnet will initially be launched exclusively in Europe, with plans to expand sales to other regions starting in 2012.
