Newly Developed 5.5-Liter V8 Engine

The Mercedes CL is a luxurious two-door coupe that went on sale in Japan in November 2006. While positioned in the same class as the S-Class, it has been well-received by users seeking a more personal vehicle. In November 2010, it received changes to its exterior and other areas. The most significant update is to the powerplant (engine). This time, the displacement has been reduced while power has been increased through forced induction.

Particularly noteworthy is the high-performance CL 63 AMG (¥22,750,000) we test drove. Based on the CL, it features sporty modifications to the chassis and powerplant, aiming to balance sportiness with luxury. This is a top recommendation for OPENERS readers.

A Powerful Yet Smooth Engine

The CL 63 AMG is powered by a newly developed 5.5-liter V8 engine. Along with a direct fuel injection system, it features twin turbochargers. Consequently, compared to the previous 6.3-liter unit, it achieves an increase of 19 ps in maximum output to 544 ps and an additional 100 Nm in maximum torque to 800 Nm. With the AMG Performance Package, maximum output further increases to 577 ps and maximum torque to 900 Nm. By adopting an idling stop mechanism and a 7-speed automatic transmission with altered gear ratios, fuel efficiency is halved compared to the previous model. CO2 emissions are also significantly reduced.

While fuel economy is important, this engine is surprisingly torquey when driven. With maximum torque of 800 Nm available from 2,000 rpm, a light press of the accelerator pedal results in acceleration as smooth as gliding on ice. What's impressive is that the torque delivery isn't brutal. Given the car's character, the emphasis is firmly on smoothness.

A Smooth Transition from "Stillness" to "Motion" That Enhances Its Presence

This smoothness is also evident in the handling. While the car responds instantly to steering inputs for immediate turn-in without any sluggishness, it also retains the characteristic of Mercedes vehicles with a slightly reduced self-aligning torque. This means the driver must consciously steer back to the neutral position. The result is a sporty feel, yet distinctly Mercedes. The car gives the impression of its torquey engine and solid suspension, hallmarks of Mercedes-Benz, being more prominently expressed.

While preserving the CL's character of graceful driving, AMG has added a greater sense of enjoyment to the handling. From the moment you sit in the driver's seat, start the engine, and press the accelerator, the sporty character gradually emerges as the engine speed rises and the car accelerates. The transition from "stillness" to "motion" is exceptionally smooth. This delightful duality makes its presence shine. If you have the means, choosing the AMG version of the CL is highly recommended.

Features That Enhance the Driving Experience, a Hallmark of Luxury Cars

Recent Mercedes-Benz models clearly differentiate their quality levels by class. That is, the interior of a B-Class feels more premium than an A-Class, and a C-Class even more so – the higher the class, the more refined the materials and ambiance. As the flagship model, the CL boasts exquisite wood paneling, polished chrome accents, and dazzling leather seats. Combined with the neatly arranged controls, the design exudes a sense of cleanliness, creating a comfortable space for Japanese drivers who appreciate such aesthetics.

The CL is equipped with Direct Steering, which varies steering speed according to the steering angle, and Torque Vectoring Brake, which controls braking during cornering to stabilize the vehicle's behavior. These features, which effectively utilize electronic control to enhance driving stability, are standard for modern luxury cars.

Coupes, with their two doors and front-seat-focused design, offer a strong sense of personal luxury and are favored by those who buy cars to enjoy driving. The CL further enhances this with its ability to minimize fatigue on long drives and its luxurious appointments crafted from high-quality materials. Personally, I consider it a highly recommendable purchase.
