A "R" with a Determined Face
The Mercedes-Benz R-Class, a crossover model that combines a spacious interior with the functionality of a station wagon and superior off-road capability thanks to its full-time four-wheel-drive system "4MATIC," was introduced to the Japanese market in 2006. Now, four years after its launch, it has undergone its first major exterior design changes, with enhanced optional equipment and a focus on improved comfort.
The most significant change this time is likely the sharper front-end design. The front of the car has been largely redesigned, with a more horizontal bonnet and fender line, newly designed headlights, a larger radiator grille, and a bumper with a chrome underguard, all emphasizing the car's width and adding a more powerful, dynamic impression.
In terms of equipment, the front features bi-xenon headlights and LED driving lights, while the rear boasts LED and fiber-optic rear combination lamps, a new bumper with an integrated under-bumper trim featuring new-design twin chrome exhaust tips, and a new bumper design with deflectors on both sides, enhancing the sporty image.
Other exterior changes include redesigned door mirrors and wheels. The newly introduced "Sports Styling Package" features 20-inch 5-twin-spoke alloy wheels and privacy glass (rear left and right, luggage compartment).
The interior has been refined with a review of materials and color coordination to enhance its quality. The standard seats are a combination of "Aspen" fabric and the soft, breathable artificial leather "ARTICO." The optional leather seats (included in the Luxury Package) have a new design. The interior color scheme features a two-tone design with a light base color combined with dark contrast colors on the dashboard, steering wheel, and door armrests. In addition to walnut wood trim, black poplar wood trim is available as an option (included in the Luxury Package).
The meter panel features white backgrounds for the needles, with a three-dimensional effect enhancing readability.
Other equipment includes a standard ETC onboard unit, as well as optional equipment such as the Sports Styling Package and an anti-theft alarm system. In terms of environmental performance, it has received certification for the "75% reduction level of 2005 exhaust gas standards" from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
