24-Hour Beauty with Steam Power (Part 2)
“Skincare that’s more integrated into daily life creates beauty.” (1)
A conversation with Keiko Ota, a hitmaker at Panasonic, who spearheaded the development of the Steamer NanoCare. This autumn’s new product responds to numerous requests received to date. Upon hearing this, Hiromi Kobayashi was quick to propose her own requests for future iterations. “I want something more integrated into daily life. That way, one can feel more secure, knowing they are connected to beauty no matter the situation,” she stated.

A Long-Awaited New Product Born from Responding to Requests
KobayashiThis autumn sees the release of two new products. Could you tell us about their respective features?
OtaFirst, there's the “Steamer NanoCare EH-SA60,” which offers both “Natu-re Esthe” and “Concentrated Esthe” in a single unit. Since we launched the Night Steamer two years ago, we’ve seen a significant increase in customers hesitant to purchase, wanting both platinum steam and night functionality. This product is our solution, combining the two.
KobayashiIt’s great to have the functionality of two devices in the space of one.
OtaYes, that’s a key feature. With the mode switching button, you can alternate between “nanoe™”※1and steam. This allows for concentrated hydration with the steam mode, and for those with more time, approximately 8 hours of continuous hydration with the nanoe mode. It’s a versatile, two-in-one device that can be used according to your lifestyle.
And this is the latest model of the Night Steamer, the “Night Steamer NanoCare EH-SA44.” In addition to its traditional functions of maintaining skin moisture with “Mist Steam™”※2and nanoe, it now features a new function to diffuse aroma oils.
KobayashiCan you use any aroma oil you like?
OtaYes, it comes with a detachable aroma cartridge, so you can diffuse your favorite scent (limited to specified aroma oils). While using aroma when you sleep is desirable, candles can be dangerous, and leaving an electric pot on all night might cause anxiety. This device, however, stops diffusing the aroma after about 20 minutes, ensuring safety.
KobayashiTwenty minutes seems a bit short...
OtaThere’s a reason for that setting: it’s based on the average time it takes for people to fall asleep after getting into bed. While the aroma creates a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom, continuous exposure isn't always beneficial. Therefore, we designed it to actively diffuse the scent during the initial sleep phase and then maintain a subtle lingering fragrance.
KobayashiI see, that’s very thoughtful. How has the reception been?
OtaFortunately, it’s been very positive. We had many requests for an aroma function on the Night Steamer even before this. So, this can be considered a ‘long-awaited’ product, launched after careful consideration.
KobayashiIs that so? In that case, I have a request of my own (laughs). It would be wonderful if we could set another aroma oil for the morning. Then, one could sleep soundly with a calming lavender scent, and wake up refreshed eight hours later to an invigorating citrus aroma to start the day. What do you think? (laughs)
OtaConsider it homework for the next product (laughs).
※1Micro-fine ions encased in water, formed by collecting moisture from the air. They have a lifespan approximately 6 times longer than general air ions and contain over 1000 times more moisture than general air ions. Being weakly acidic, similar to skin, they are gentle on the skin and lead to refined skin texture with prolonged use.
※2Steam mixed with air. Features a temperature setting that prioritizes safety (approx. 47°C steam temperature at an ambient room temperature of 30°C).

Why Not Make the Most of Your Most Beautifying Time?
KobayashiHearing your explanation, it seems the Night Steamer has become as popular as the full-spec models. You are its creator, Ms. Ota. Please tell us about the inspiration behind its development.
OtaAs I mentioned earlier, our company has a long history with facial steamers, and each has been well-received. However, needs evolve with the times. When I transitioned into product planning, we received many comments like, “I want to use it for as long as possible,” or “I don’t have 15 minutes to spare just for using a beauty device, as I’m so busy every day.”
We deduced that many women desire beauty routines that can be seamlessly incorporated into their lifestyles. This led us to the concept of “multitasking beauty.” When we discussed this with our female team members, we all agreed that it would be ideal if something could be done while sleeping.
At that point, we hadn’t specifically considered a steamer, but as the project progressed, the consensus was, “But hydration is key, isn’t it? That’s what everyone struggles with.” And so, the development of a steamer exclusively for nighttime use began.
KobayashiIt’s wonderful that it works while you sleep. I’ve even heard stories of husbands’ hair becoming smoother just by being near it, much to their surprise (laughs).
OtaHahaha.
KobayashiA day has 24 hours, and a year has 365 days – that’s the same for everyone. Yet, the difference in skin quality arises from small, daily efforts and how effectively one uses their time for beauty. For instance, when busy with both work and personal life, it’s easy to decide that one simply doesn’t have time for beauty. However, there are actually optimal times for beauty care.
OtaYes, and that time is when you are sleeping.
KobayashiIndeed, metabolism is most active during sleep. Since we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, we should make use of that ample time.
OtaPrecisely.
KobayashiAnd that’s where beauty devices come in. With a Night Steamer, it’s safe, and maintaining moisture during sleep leads to a better condition the next morning. Your skin texture improves, makeup applies better, and this boosts your confidence, leading to compliments and further positivity. It’s a virtuous cycle.
Do you leave your sleeping hours completely unattended, or do you take a small action for beauty? It boils down to motivation. The same applies to cosmetics. There’s a clear difference in skin results between someone who applies them vaguely, with their mind elsewhere, and someone who takes the time to apply them properly.
OtaYes, it’s just a small effort, but it ultimately makes a big difference. As we get older, we truly feel that (laughs).
KobayashiIt’s still possible. The best time to start is when you realize it, so it’s never too late!

From Now On, Beauty That Can Be Done Effortlessly is Best
KobayashiWith the full-spec product, the Night Steamer, and devices for the desk, you have a lineup that perfectly covers 24 hours. Was this intentional?
OtaBy creating the Night Steamer, which can be used continuously for 8 hours with a single switch, the skincare time has effectively extended; what was once a 15-minute care routine has now become an 8-hour care. Naturally, this led us to consider other scenarios. As a result, this 24-hour line has been established.
However, from Panasonic Beauty's perspective, our stance is “We support your beauty 24 hours a day,” meaning we offer support when needed, not that you must be engaged in beauty routines around the clock. It’s a selection of options. We’re not saying, “We have many products, so use them all.” Instead, we encourage you to choose what makes you feel most comfortable and what you can enjoy doing daily.
KobayashiDoes this mean the options will continue to expand?
OtaYes, my mind is always occupied with that (laughs).
KobayashiThen, here’s another request (laughs). I enjoy watching TV or DVDs while bathing. So, I always think, wouldn’t it be great to have a steamer that sprays directly sideways? Since you’re in the bath, steam naturally rises from below. But because I’m watching the monitor, I’d like the steam to come from that direction too. Being able to watch TV or DVDs while soaking in the tub and improving my skin would be a triple benefit (laughs). When daily life and beauty are closely integrated with beauty devices, it provides a strong sense of security, knowing you are connected to beauty in any situation.
OtaI see. Indeed, it’s wonderful when usage scenarios expand. Now, regarding beauty devices in general, could I hear your thoughts? Since we have this opportunity, I’d like to ask for your opinion.
KobayashiI’d like them to be closer, almost sticking with static electricity. While their role as a reliable support in certain situations is important, I’d ideally like them to be at a level where they are inseparable from oneself.
There’s no set time for skincare. Some people consider the time after sending their children off to school as their beauty time, while others find their beauty moment when they relax after returning from work. Since everyone has different amounts of time dedicated to beauty, it would be great to have beauty devices that are more accessible and can be used “the moment you want to use them.”
Like eating a meal or changing clothes, something that feels like, “Okay, let’s do this~,” more integrated into our lifestyles. Even without much time, if the device is there and you know it’s effective, I believe people can approach beauty more positively.
OtaCertainly, since everyone is busy, ease of use is essential. I feel that products that make the user feel good simply by using them are what’s currently in demand.
KobayashiYes. From now on, the best approach to beauty is not about striving intensely, but about “beauty that can be done with a relaxed mind.”
OtaWe’ve entered an era where everyone can choose the beauty regimen that suits them best.
KobayashiHowever, with so many options, some might feel unsure about what to choose. Therefore, I believe it’s also important to narrow down the choices and suggest what works best.
OtaI agree. That’s why we prioritize quality over quantity. We aim to create products that are distinctly different, things that haven’t existed before.
KobayashiPlease do! Thank you very much for your time today.
