Twiggy

Vol.4: Products for "Self-Cultivation" Launch. (Part 2)

Miho Matsuura is a popular hairstylist who has been at the forefront of fashion trends for years at her salon "Twiggy," which she has led since 1990. Now, a project she has nurtured for several years is coming to fruition this autumn. It's an "organic shampoo & treatment" line developed in-house. In an era of remarkable scientific leaps in the cosmetics industry, why has a leader in fashion consistently focused on "organic"? This series will unravel the secrets behind it.

The "Twiggy your sanctuary" haircare series, Twiggy's first in-house product line, quickly became the talk of the beauty industry upon its release. It addresses issues many women have resigned themselves to, such as poor lathering and weak fragrance, often accepting them as compromises for "natural products." This haircare series, without straying from the realm of natural cosmetics, appeals to the senses in the process of beauty and prompts us to reconsider the importance of choosing products with environmental consciousness.

Q. It was quite an "event" in the industry for you, a purveyor of fashion, to launch environmentally conscious products.

Recently, there have been many films depicting near-future natural disasters, and I believe they reflect an underlying, unconscious sense of crisis. Some theories suggest the Earth only has 50 years left in its current state. While our surrounding environment is that precarious, many in the fashion industry still treat eco-friendliness as a "trend." However, what's needed now isn't a fleeting "trend" but "sustainable" eco-consciousness. I believe those who realize this should consider how they can contribute to sustainability in their own way. This product is the result of me, as an individual, recognizing this and giving form to an idea that came to me.

As a hairdresser, this is my wish to strengthen hair, and my message to re-evaluate myself and my surroundings simultaneously. It feels like if I don't do this, I'll be struck by divine retribution, and my children might not inherit a habitable planet... I realized this when I encountered Neal's Yard in the UK, and it took quite some time to bring it to fruition (laughs). In the beauty industry, if you're an esthetician working with individuals, you might suggest dietary changes to improve a client's spots or wrinkles, right? That's a very personal approach. I wondered if the hairdressing industry could change if each individual hairdresser could do something similar. That's why I wanted to realize this product.

YUME DREAMING (Shampoo/For normal to damaged hair) Uses rose water from Bulgarian Damask roses.

VOLUME DOWN (Shampoo/For thick, frizzy, or unruly hair)

VOLUME UP (Shampoo/For fine hair needing body and volume)

HARBAK ORGANIC (Shampoo/For normal hair)

Q. You've also overturned the "conventions" of traditional haircare products.

Yes. What becomes popular in the hairdressing industry is still often detrimental to the environment. Products focused on immediate results, like the "silky smooth hair" that the public desires. For example, the polymers used to achieve "silky smooth hair" are silicone-based materials, like crushed glass. The ends of hair that have grown to a certain length are already dead, so whether you apply silicone to those dead ends is up to you, but if you're going to apply polymers to the pores of your scalp, wouldn't it be better to use something nourishing? Therefore, "Twiggy your sanctuary" is designed to be rich in nutrients from the shampoo itself, with the concept of "nurturing the scalp and hair," and if more is needed, the treatment is applied sparingly to the ends.

Q. So, shampoo has a meaning beyond just cleansing?

The idea that shampoo and treatment work in the same way is mistaken. Even if shampoo cleanses the pores, if the treatment contains silicone, it will enter the pores you just cleaned. Instead, we created a product that, if left on for two to three minutes after shampooing, requires no further treatment. I used to think treatments were essential. Over a decade ago, I heard a researcher talk about "nurturing hair with shampoo," but I didn't quite grasp it then. But when I thought about it, treatments make hair smooth and easy to comb, but it's the shampoo that enters the pores daily.

I realized that shampoo is important for nurturing hair, and treatment is only needed for the ends to improve combability. So, we decided to create separate products for the "roots" and the "ends." That's why with "Twiggy your sanctuary" shampoos, you essentially finish there. However, since many people's hair ends become alkaline due to perms and coloring, we advise applying treatment only to the ends to care for those alkaline areas.

YUME DREAMING (Treatment/Contains animal protein)

Q. The usability of this series is excellent, especially for natural cosmetics.

For instance, shampoos that are so true to their ingredients they leave hair feeling rough don't provide a satisfying experience, do they? So, in addition to "HARBEL ORGANIC," we created another product with animal protein and rose water for a smooth finish without silicone. The rose water is from Bulgarian Damask roses. While other organic products derive this protein from plants, Twiggy uses collagen from fish scales, keratin from wool, and silkworms to achieve a better texture, firmness, and body. This is one of the distinctive features of this product line.

The main ingredients in the treatments are plant-derived, but all except "HARBAL ORGANIC" contain less than 0.1 milligrams of silicone. I wanted to be upfront about this because amounts less than 0.1 milligrams don't need to be listed on the ingredients. They are water-soluble, of course. But I wanted to state it explicitly. And this should be applied to the ends, not the roots. After all, if your hair feels stiff after rinsing, it's stressful, isn't it? For someone with short hair like me, shampoo alone is sufficient, followed by a leave-in treatment. There are three types of these leave-in treatments, and I use "SMOOTH EMULSION" for better combability. "VOLUME UP," which adds firmness and body, uses organic potato starch. "VOLUME DOWN," which improves hair manageability, contains fucoidan, protein, and keratin, similar to "VOLUME UP," and is designed to nurture hair and scalp.

HARBAL ORGANIC (Treatment/Completely plant-derived ingredients)

I had another objective in launching this series: the bottles.
It's about President Hatakeyama's stance at Heiwa Chemical regarding "biomass bottles." Because they are made from corn-derived ingredients, they can be treated as "burnable waste." However, I believe that 100% recycling is true "eco-friendliness," and we have been able to implement this. I strongly resonated with this "sustainability." Apparently, Twiggy is the first in the cosmetics industry to use biomass for bottle caps as well.
I heard that because of this, we were nominated for this year's "Eco-Products Award."
I hope to resonate with various people through this spirit of turning the "impossible" into the "possible."

VOLUME DOWN (Treatment/Contains animal protein)

SMOOTH EMULSION (Treatment/Standard treatment. Improves combability of hair ends. Convenient to use with VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN)

Q. How do you view chemicals?

It's not that chemicals are inherently "NG"; it's meaningless if we don't properly consider *why* they are NG. For example, if materials that are bad for the environment become more necessary, what will we do? Is it okay to continue applying chemical materials to the pores that nurture our hair? This goes beyond products; it's a more fundamental question. The important thing is, "Do you like yourself?" If you like yourself, you should choose good ingredients for yourself, and I believe that a similar desire to cherish the global environment surrounding you will lead to how you choose products.

VOLUME UP (Treatment/Contains animal protein)

HAIR ESSENS (Hair Essence/Primarily for hair growth and nourishment)

I don't intend to criticize anyone's "flaws" or way of thinking. I was like that myself. But it's important to be able to change from the point where you realize it, and if you change only to burn out, it's better to stop. If not, it's better to continue—Perhaps I wouldn't have developed this way of thinking if I hadn't had children. But just as I am, when my children eventually have their own children, they will be grateful to their parents, won't they? At that time, recalling the relationship with my parents and similarities, I start to feel affection not only for my present self but also for the future. Then, thinking, "Maybe I've been able to do something a little useful?" I can like myself more... I thought that if I could realize this product, I could like myself even more (laughs).
