Truefitt & Hill: The Same Age as Beethoven's 'Eroica'
Truefitt & Hill, said to be the world's oldest barbershop with over 200 years of history. It reigns as a must-have item not only for British gentlemen but for gentlemen around the globe. Let's delve into its charm... or so the plan goes, but how deeply can I, born in rural Ehime, truly grasp its allure? Frankly, I'm not confident.
To be blunt, I couldn't shake the initial impression that, "No matter how hard I try, it's just a shaving shop..." However, since I can't get anywhere with that attitude, I'll devise a strategy to first build rapport by exploring the connections between the era Truefitt & Hill was born and opera, my profession.
Truefitt & Hill was founded on October 21, 1805. The year 1805 also marks the premiere of Beethoven's (Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827) only opera, 'Fidelio,' which ended in a grand failure. Hmm... not a good omen. Isn't there a better example? Ah, the premiere of Beethoven's 'Eroica,' a symphony hailed as innovative and still highly popular today, was also in 1805. Yes, this is a truly fitting analogy for the history of Truefitt & Hill. I should have brought this up from the start.
Truefitt & Hill, being the same age as Beethoven's 'Eroica,' can indeed be said to be worthy of the title 'heroic.' The world's oldest barbershop is not just for show.

Will Experiencing Truefitt & Hill Provide Fuel for Portraying Figaro?
Hearing about the world's oldest barbershop, there's a work that opera singers must touch upon. Thirty years before the founding of Truefitt & Hill and the premiere of Beethoven's 'Eroica,' in 1775, Beaumarchais (full name: Pierre-Augustin Caron 1732-1799) published the play 'The Barber of Seville.'
The protagonist, Figaro, is a barber in Seville, who not only shaves but also serves as a general consultant for the town. While Figaro's shaving kit may not historically be from Truefitt & Hill, anyone familiar with Figaro will understand the significant commonality as Truefitt & Hill expanded its services beyond shaving to include wigs, fragrances, nail salons, and even a social hub for British gentlemen. The social status of barbers and their influence on the aristocracy due to their success can be fully understood not only from 'The Barber of Seville' but also from its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro.'
Figaro also appears, naturally, in Mozart's (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1756-1791) 'The Marriage of Figaro.' Unfortunately, the role I excel at is Count Almaviva, whom Figaro serves. The lyrics for Count Almaviva, a Spanish nobleman, include the line, "I have been appointed ambassador to London..." Oh, London. Am I getting a little closer to Truefitt & Hill?
The chance for Figaro to demonstrate his skills as a barber is well-prepared in 'The Barber of Seville' with a scene shaving his master's beard, and in 'The Marriage of Figaro' with a scene styling his wife's hair. The barber's scenes in these two major operas... thinking about it, in terms of historical significance and understanding of daily life and culture, they are a testament to the barber's value. Will experiencing Truefitt & Hill provide fuel for portraying Figaro? Hmm, I understand the richness of Truefitt & Hill's history. I can also appreciate the status of a skilled barber. The remaining issue is how to incorporate it into my own life.

Behold the majestic presence of Truefitt & Hill, enthroned upon the marble washbasin.
Before me now, a complete shaving set is laid out with a flourish. I don't have particularly thick facial hair. Therefore, shaving is a rather casual act, something I do vaguely while showering. For shaving, which holds little significance for me, such beautiful and seemingly expensive tools are arranged with a strong presence.
Truefitt & Hill, what kind of inspiration will you give me? Thinking that the elite members of Truefitt & Hill might feel out of place in my cluttered home washbasin, I decided to have them demonstrate their prowess during my work visit to Milan, Italy.
This spacious and beautiful washroom. This open environment seems ideal for receiving the Truefitt & Hill baptism. I immediately arranged the Truefitt & Hill elite on the washbasin. All one needs for bathing is soap... I'm not that extravagant, but with just a suitable shampoo and conditioner, I'm set. To me, the Truefitt & Hill product line is like the cosmetics that adorn a woman's washbasin. Yet, it somehow looks cool.
