The Iconic Moonwatch is Finally Master Chronometer Certified!

The "Speedmaster Moonwatch," one of OMEGA's most iconic collections, has made its mark on the history of space exploration. The latest addition to this collection is the "Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer."

Eight Models Released, Including Boutique Exclusives

The new "Speedmaster Moonwatch Master Chronometer" is an updated chronograph that reinterprets the classic style inspired by its historical design for the modern era, while newly achieving Master Chronometer certification.

The most significant feature of this update is the introduction of the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. This grants the new Moonwatch the ability to withstand magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss, achieving Master Chronometer certification, which signifies the pinnacle of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance in the Swiss watch industry.

The model that served as the basis for this timepiece is the fourth-generation Moonwatch, worn by astronauts on the moon in 1969, generally known by its reference number ST 105.012. In homage to the space age, it features the iconic asymmetrical case, step dial, double-bevel case back, and the famous "dot over 90" and "dot diagonal to 70" markings on the aluminum bezel ring. Each of these is a subtle design detail, yet they are crucial elements in telling the Speedmaster's story.

Particularly noteworthy is the updated bracelet. With its fully brushed finish and five-link, arched construction, the seamless bracelet offers an unprecedentedly smooth fit. Another distinctive feature is the new clasp, which uses a polished OMEGA logo on a satin-finished surface, reminiscent of the style of vintage Moonwatches.

Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA, stated, "When updating a legendary timepiece like the Speedmaster Moonwatch, it is essential to reflect the unique identity of the original model in every detail. As this is a globally renowned chronograph, we proceeded with exceptional care regarding design changes. Simultaneously, we pushed the movement to the next level." This meticulous update is also evident on the dial, where the minute scale has been changed from 1/5-second increments to 1/3-second increments to match the vibration frequency of the Calibre 3861.

This new Moonwatch is available in a total of eight variations. The stainless steel models come with either a sapphire crystal or a Hesalite glass front. Additionally, two boutique-exclusive models are offered in 18K Canopus Gold™ and 18K Sedna™ Gold, each available with a matching bracelet or an alligator leather strap. The Hesalite glass models can also be paired with a nylon strap. All four stainless steel models will be available at OMEGA boutiques starting Saturday, January 16, 2020, with wider distribution to follow. All four gold models will be exclusive to OMEGA boutiques.
