OMEGA: Beyond Watchmaking, Embracing Social Transformation
With a spirit of pioneering, OMEGA has announced its participation in the first-ever mission to recover and remove non-functional satellites as the first phase of a long-term project to reduce the cost of space debris removal, in partnership with ClearSpace. Currently, thousands of satellites orbit the Earth, most of which are no longer operational. These abandoned objects pose a risk of explosion or collision with other satellites, presenting one of humanity's most pressing challenges. ClearSpace has secured a €86 million contract with the European Space Agency and plans to conduct its first space debris removal mission in 2025.
Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann, President and CEO of OMEGA, described the partnership as "a logical next step for OMEGA, which has a history of achievements in both space exploration and planetary preservation," and called ClearSpace's initiative "one of the most important, exciting, and wonderful projects since the Apollo missions."
OMEGA has consistently transcended its role as a watchmaker to effect positive social change. Through its partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation and its founder Yann Arthus-Bertrand, OMEGA has produced numerous documentaries and implemented joint conservation projects under the banner of "Time for the Planet." The brand also supports Nekton, a non-profit research foundation dedicated to the protection of the world's oceans. Furthermore, OMEGA contributes to the mapping of the seabed through its support of the "Five Deeps Expedition," led by Victor Vescovo, which explores the deepest points of the five oceans, in addition to its efforts in cleaning up land and sea.
Through its ongoing partnerships and the newly announced support for ClearSpace, the Swiss watch brand OMEGA continues its active commitment to a sustainable future. ClearSpace has developed technology to capture and de-orbit defunct satellites and other objects that threaten human space activities. The company also provides services to support sustainable space development by national space agencies and private operators in Earth's orbit. In 2020, ClearSpace signed a €86 million contract with the European Space Agency and will commence its first debris removal mission in 2025.
