Three Models in Blue & White: The "Mechanical Divers Modern Design Save the Ocean" Series Debuts
From Prospex by Seiko, three new "1965 / 1968 / 1970 Mechanical Divers Modern Design Save the Ocean" models, which express the grandeur of polar glaciers on their dials, will be released on Friday, June 24, 2022.
Three Distinct Models Featuring Textured Dials Evoking Glaciers
Seiko's dive watches have been launched one after another since their debut in 1965 as Japan's first dive watch, equipped with unique technologies. They have been used by many adventurers and explorers in all of Earth's harsh environments and have earned high praise, including being donated four times as equipment for the "Antarctic Observation Expedition" since 1966.
In 1968, a model was released that combined a monocoque case without a separate case back with a high-beat movement operating at 10 beats per second, which was the world's highest standard at the time, achieving both 300-meter water resistance and high accuracy. The model introduced in 1970, characterized by its crown guard at the 4 o'clock position, was carried by adventurer Naomiki Uemura on his 12,000-kilometer dog sled journey across the Arctic from 1974 to 1976, proving its high reliability and safety in extreme conditions. The Antarctic and Arctic, where these divers were active, are symbols of Seiko Divers' challenges and can be considered their origin. And in 2022, the new "1965 / 1968 / 1970 Mechanical Divers Modern Design Save the Ocean" models were born, expressing the world of magnificent glaciers spreading across the polar regions on their dials.
The glaciers designed on the dials of all three models were formed over a long period, from approximately 150 million years ago to 3 million years ago, as snow repeatedly accumulated and, under weight and pressure, transformed into ice crystals, piling up to create glaciers. The dynamic appearance of these glaciers is expressed through a three-dimensional, elegant stamped pattern, while the specific glacial scenery serving as the base image differs for each model, reflected in their distinct color schemes.
The "1965 Divers Modern Design Model," based on the 1965 original that represents the origin of Seiko Divers, layers the accumulation of over half a century of history and cultivated technology with glaciers formed over vast periods, expressed through a deep, dark blue dial and a solid black bezel.
The "1968 Divers Modern Design Model" evokes the glaciers of the Antarctic continent, the starting point of Seiko Divers' challenges, with a light blue dial and dark blue bezel recreating the magnificent landscape of ice sheets covering the land. The "1970 Divers Modern Design Model," based on the original carried by Naomiki Uemura on his Arctic dog sled journey, features a pure white dial representing the glaciers floating above the Arctic Ocean and the extreme cold.
All models feature stainless steel cases treated with DiaShield for protection against scratches and scuffs, maintaining their beautiful luster. They also employ sapphire crystal glass with an anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, ensuring high durability and legibility. The mechanical Caliber 6R35 housed within the case offers a long power reserve of 70 hours, providing high practicality that allows the watch to be worn on Monday even if not worn over the weekend.
Prospex by Seiko has supported various marine conservation efforts, expressing gratitude to owners of Seiko Divers watches and to the vast ocean. The "Save the Ocean" series symbolizes this sentiment. Seiko will continue its activities with Goal 14, "Life Below Water," of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind.
