A Grand Complication Model with a Lacquered Dial Expressing the Night Sky
The "Complication" collection from CAMPANOLA will welcome "Tomarikon," a limited edition model featuring a lacquered dial that expresses traditional Japanese colors and a Grand Complication movement, on Thursday, August 8, 2019.
"Tomarikon" is a traditional color that was highly prized for its deep indigo hue, so dark that it could not be dyed any deeper with indigo dyeing; the character "留" (tome, meaning to stop or retain) is used to express this ultimate depth of indigo. This color is likened to the boundless expanse of the universe, and the unique luster and three-dimensionality are achieved by applying lacquer to both the dial and the rehaut.
The dial, characterized by its overlapping circles, draws inspiration from the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek device believed to have been used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. The hour hand represents the sun, and the minute hand represents the moon. The hour and minute hands, arranged in concentric circles, overlap once every hour, creating a mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of a solar eclipse. Despite the complex dial, which includes calendar indications on sub-dials and tachymeter and 1/4-second chronograph scales inscribed on a double-layered 'gokuraku' ring, legibility is maintained through color-coding.

This limited edition model is equipped with Citizen's unique "Grand Complication" movement, which realizes the four major complications—a minute repeater that chimes the time, a moon phase that displays lunar cycles, a perpetual calendar that automatically corrects for leap years until February 28, 2100, and a chronograph capable of standard, cumulative, and split-time measurements—all powered by quartz. Since the debut of the Grand Complication model in the "CAMPANOLA" line in 2002, it has been the brand's signature, innovative movement.
In addition to this limited edition, two new models will be released simultaneously: the new "Kokike" model, also featuring the Grand Complication, and a new metal bracelet model with an electroformed decorative dial.
