A Legendary Model Updated with Modern Technology

The model CK 2998, introduced in 1959, symbolized the second generation of the Speedmaster. It featured slender alpha hands, a symmetrical case, and a dark bezel, offering a distinct character from the first generation that debuted in 1957. One admirer of this CK 2998 was NASA astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra.
He purchased this model as his personal watch and wore it during the Mercury-Sigma 7 mission, which launched on October 3, 1962. At that moment, the CK 2998 became the "First Omega in Space," marking the beginning of OMEGA's tradition in space exploration. Since then, the CK 2998 has been highly sought after by watch enthusiasts and Speedmaster fans.
The newly released "Speedmaster First Omega in Space" follows the second-generation style of 1959, featuring a symmetrical 39.70mm stainless steel case with polished and brushed finishes. The bezel ring is made of black aluminum and bears the essential Speedmaster tachymeter scale. Notably, it also includes the "dot over 90," a hallmark of early Speedmaster models.
The new sapphire crystal, shaped to mimic the appearance of Hesalite, covers a grey-blue dial finished with CVD treatment. This dial recreates the tone of the CK 2998 manufactured in the 1960s, with vintage Super-LumiNova applied to the indices and hour and minute hands. The central chronograph seconds hand is finished with white varnish to match the transferred markings.
The movement is the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. This is the latest evolution of the Calibre 321 found in the original model, representing a significant upgrade that delivers the highest standards of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance in modern watchmaking.
Vintage OMEGA logos adorn the dial and crown, signifying the model's heritage and storied past. The case back features the iconic Seahorse medallion, engraved with "SPEEDMASTER," "THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE," and "OCTOBER 3, 1962," underscoring its role in carrying the legacy of the "First Omega in Space" into the present day.
The bracelet is available in three styles: a metal bracelet with "flat links" featuring OMEGA's patented comfort release adjustment system, or a black or brown leather strap with a buckle. Each model comes presented in a special box accompanied by a leaflet titled "LEGENDARY MOONWATCH."
Our understanding of space has advanced dramatically since the 1960s, mirroring the evolution of rocket technology. Watchmaking has similarly made significant strides. The "First Omega in Space" embodies the pinnacle of human technology and the enduring spirit of progress.
