A Bauhaus Masterpiece Reimagined in Light Blue Ceramic
The collaboration between Junghans and Max Bill began with the kitchen clock in 1956. Now, in 2022, this historic icon is resurrected in its original design.
Since the 1920s, Junghans designers had been diligently pursuing the ambitious goal of creating the most beautiful watch. To strengthen its in-house design expertise, Junghans proposed a collaboration in 1956 with Max Bill, an artist and product designer from the Bauhaus school. Max Bill, who "loved watches more than anything," joyfully accepted the offer and designed the kitchen clock.
Junghans has now revived this classic masterpiece, which has been a sought-after collector's item, faithfully recreating its original colors, form, and materials.
This piece is a meticulous recreation of the 1956 original, designed in collaboration with his students at the Ulm School of Design, based on Max Bill's sketches for "the ideal clock." Like all his works, this kitchen clock is characterized by the fusion of functionality and aesthetics. Every element's placement was determined with daily usability and utility in mind, and even after more than 60 years, this design has lost none of its beauty or clarity.
The light blue enameled ceramic case is meticulously finished by hand by artisans at the Majolica factory in Baden-Württemberg. The white dial, framed by a chrome-plated bezel, boasts excellent legibility thanks to its clean design and the typeface developed by Max Bill. The lower part of the ceramic case, which tapers downwards, houses a mechanical timer that can measure up to 60 minutes for cooking or other tasks, signaling the end of the set time with a nostalgic chime reminiscent of the 1950s. While the kitchen clock was initially produced in mechanical and later in electric versions, this model features a quartz movement.
Max Bill later recalled his work on the timepiece: "In a household, the kitchen clock is often the only clock on the wall. Children learn to read the time from it, and it must be as clear and easy to use as any cooking utensil." The long-standing collaboration between Junghans and Max Bill enters a new chapter with the revival of this kitchen clock, marking the iconic design's comeback after 65 years.
