A Glowing Cube? The Tambour Spin Time Air Quantum by Louis Vuitton
LOUIS VUITTON
Louis Vuitton's New High Watch: A Cube That Glows Through Inventive Complication
Since its debut in 2009, "Spin Time" has become an iconic timepiece for Louis Vuitton. Now, the "Tambour Spin Time Air Quantum," which illuminates on demand, has been unveiled as its latest iteration.
A Hybrid Watch Featuring a Complication Beyond Convention
Using 12 rotating cubes instead of an hour hand, "Spin Time" uniquely displays the time with two adjacent cubes instantly rotating. This timepiece elevates time display into a playful, three-dimensional dance.
The newly announced "Tambour Spin Time Air Quantum" retains the three-dimensional movement of "Spin Time" while fundamentally rethinking high watchmaking, achieving further evolution and transformation. The cubes glow as if illuminated from within, adding a fourth dimension to an exceptionally original complication. This concept is inspired by "quantum" in quantum mechanics and the bioluminescence of deep-sea creatures. This piece, featuring 12 small light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that illuminate the "Spin Time" display from the inside, is a sophisticated example of high watchmaking, skillfully blending artistry in watchmaking with the science of microelectronics.
Jean Arnault, Louis Vuitton's Director of Watch Marketing and Product Development, stated, "After 12 years of refining the patented 'Spin Time,' we boldly pursued an unprecedented technical challenge. The 'Tambour Spin Time Air Quantum' is not only an extraordinary feat in watchmaking but also a unique, unconventional, and supremely complex hybrid watch that combines the essence of both mechanical watchmaking and electronics, ensuring both legibility and design."
Inside the case lies the Caliber LV 68, developed in-house by "La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton," a Geneva-based watchmaking atelier specializing in complex mechanisms. This Caliber LV 68, which appears to float within the watch case, is a mechanical movement, just like the "Spin Time Air" movement, and possesses the exact same functionality. However, when the push-button integrated into the crown is pressed, small LEDs positioned directly inside the flange on the top of each hour cube illuminate, making them glow as if lit from within.
Notably, the illumination can be made bright and sustained. As long as the push-button is held down, the cubes remain lit, and even after releasing the button, the illumination continues for three seconds.
The execution is a testament to Louis Vuitton's mastery of precision and ingenuity. By leveraging technology to further enhance time display and meticulously ensuring the physical separation and independence (modularity) of the electronic and mechanical components, it offers both ease of use and straightforward maintenance. The titanium case, in matte black with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating, contrasts with the vibrant green and yellow of the Super-LumiNova®. The sapphire crystal case back features a unique metallized emblem, where the Louis Vuitton logo is designed to resemble a circuit board, lending a cohesive aesthetic to the entire watch.
