New Speedmaster Calibre 321 Canopus Gold™ Celebrates 65th Anniversary of the First Speedmaster
Omega has released the "Speedmaster Calibre 321 Canopus Gold™" as a new model for 2022. This timepiece captures attention with its vintage details inherited from the original Speedmaster CK2915-1 collection and the aesthetic of 18K Canopus Gold™.
Onyx Dial, Gold Hands: Every Detail is Exquisitely Sharp
Inspired by the first Speedmaster, known as the CK2915-1, the new "Speedmaster Calibre 321 Canopus Gold™" is a commemorative model celebrating its 65th anniversary. The 38.6mm case is crafted from unique 18K Canopus Gold™. This material is Omega's proprietary white gold alloy, characterized by its high brilliance, whiteness, and durability. The crown features a Naiad mark, indicating a unique waterproof system, which was actually designed on several models of the first Speedmaster.
The dial is made of black onyx, featuring the vintage Omega logo and the oval "O" that are symbols of the first Speedmaster. It also includes 18K white gold hands and indices with Canopus Gold™ PVD coating, sub-dials for small seconds, 30-minute counter, and 12-hour counter, as well as a central chronograph hand and a tachymeter scale. The tachymeter scale on the bezel is rendered in black "Grand Feu" enamel. Upon closer inspection, one can discern two details particularly cherished by collectors among the features of the first Speedmaster: the "Dot Over 90" (DON) and the "Dot Diagonal to 70".
The renowned "Calibre 321" housed within the case is the original movement that powered the Speedmaster in 1957. It is also a historically significant movement that accompanied all six lunar landings, including the Apollo missions. Since 2019, Omega has resumed production of the "Calibre 321," meticulously recreating its authentic specifications from the era. This calibre is a crucial element that strongly evokes the Speedmaster's history and its inherited tradition for this model.
Inside the sapphire crystal glass on the back of the watch, Omega's Seahorse is engraved. This is the brand's symbol, used on the Speedmaster since 1957, and fitting for the 65th anniversary, its eyes are adorned with precious, sparkling blue sapphires. This timepiece comes with an 18K Canopus Gold™ bracelet featuring a comfort release system for easy size adjustment. Furthermore, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Speedmaster, it is presented in a special wooden box with a rosewood-like finish, replicating the original Speedmaster box from 1957.
