A Limited Edition Watch in Black and Gold to Honor Clemente
For years, Oris has supported organizations driving positive social change, primarily in environmental conservation. In 2020, the brand forged a partnership with the humanitarian foundation bearing the name of baseball hero Roberto Clemente, unveiling the "Oris Roberto Clemente Limited Edition" to commemorate his legacy.
The watch features a white dial, inspired by Clemente's uniform, complemented by black and gold details that celebrate his achievements. It comes with a light brown leather strap, along with interchangeable NATO straps in white, black, and gold. This limited edition is available in 3,000 pieces worldwide.
Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker was born in Puerto Rico in 1934, the youngest of seven siblings. He would go on to become a legendary figure in baseball history and a humanitarian dedicated to his homeland and community. Despite a humble upbringing, he entered Puerto Rico's professional baseball league at 17 and joined the Brooklyn Dodgers a year later, overcoming racial discrimination to showcase his talent.
In 1955, he transferred to the Pittsburgh Pirates, making his Major League debut. He played with the Pirates for 18 seasons, demonstrating exceptional skill to win two World Series championships and earn 12 Gold Glove awards. In his final game in September 1972, he achieved his 3,000th hit, a historic milestone for a player of Latin American descent.
That winter, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Nicaragua, claiming over 11,000 lives and leaving 300,000 homeless. Roberto, also a social activist, boarded a plane with relief supplies on December 31st to ensure they reached those in need. Tragically, the aircraft crashed into the sea, and he was lost at the age of 38 while en route to help others.
Roberto was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, ensuring his name would live on in history. The same year, the "Commissioner's Award," given to Major League players for their charitable work, was renamed the "Roberto Clemente Award." His number 21 was retired by the Pirates. In 1993, his wife Vera and son Luis established the "Roberto Clemente Foundation" with the mission to "create a better society," continuing Roberto's legacy through their philanthropic efforts.
