Breitling Unveils the New Avenger and Other New Models in Los Angeles | BREITLING

BREITLING

The core Avenger collection is streamlined to six models and 14 references, with a focus on NATO straps.

On September 24th and 25th, 2019, Breitling hosted the "Los Angeles Summit" in Los Angeles. Among the new models unveiled, the most notable were the newly updated "Avenger" and the "Superocean," featuring straps made from recycled nylon.

A bold creation with a completely redesigned case shape.

Since Georges Kern took the helm as CEO in July 2017, Breitling has been re-evaluating its heritage pieces while simultaneously rebuilding its current collections and developing new models. The resulting new models have been presented at events called "SUMMIT" to distributors and press worldwide. At the "SUMMIT" held in Los Angeles this time, the "new generation Avenger" garnered significant attention from attendees.
Breitling's models are currently categorized into four areas: Air, Sea, Land, and Professional. The "Avenger" belongs to the Air category, alongside the "Aviator 8" and "Navitimer." It is known as a "pilot's watch" and strongly embodies Breitling's DNA.
According to Kern, he had been considering an update to the "Avenger" since taking office. The reason for this was the sheer number of references.
Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling. After serving as CEO of IWC, among other roles, he assumed his current position in July 2017. "Breitling will continue to change. The new Breitling is just beginning," he states.
"The 'Avenger' is one of Breitling's successful collections. However, with 41 references, I felt that the concept of the 'Avenger' was becoming diluted. Therefore, we have consolidated it into six models and 14 references to clarify the message."
At first glance, the minute markers on the bezel are gone, and the numbered rider tabs have been unified with bar indices. While this gives it a cleaner aesthetic, the difference from the previous Avenger was subtle in the model photos displayed on the large screen during the presentation.
However, the difference is striking when worn. The fit has been dramatically improved.
"We have redesigned the case and lug shapes based on ergonomics to ensure a better fit on the wrist. While retaining the Avenger's DNA, it has been reborn with a new case."
I now understand why, when introducing the Avenger, they initially said, "Nothing has changed, yet everything has changed." I was thoroughly convinced.

Reaffirming Commitment to Ocean Conservation

Another intriguing model unveiled was the "Superocean Automatic 44 Outerknown" and the "Outerknown Econyl® Yarn NATO Strap Collection."
As the name suggests, the "Superocean" is part of the Sea collection, but one might wonder about "Outerknown" appearing alongside it. Outerknown is a fashion brand specializing in sustainable apparel, co-founded by surfing legend and Breitling "Surfers Squad" member Kelly Slater.
In 2018, Breitling forged a partnership with "Ocean Conservancy," a global NGO dedicated to marine environmental protection. This marked the beginning of Breitling's intensified efforts in ocean conservation. Kelly, stating, "For surfers, the ocean is our workplace and our home," is also actively involved in conservation activities and advocacy.
The recycled nylon manufacturer chosen by Outerknown is Aquafil, which developed "Econyl® Yarn." Conventional recycled nylon is typically made by grinding and melting discarded nylon, which often results in reduced color vibrancy and strength compared to "virgin" nylon. However, "Econyl® Yarn" reverts discarded nylon to an oil-like state before manufacturing new nylon fibers. This process allows for "virgin" quality even from recycled materials. It boasts rich colors, exceptional durability, and a smooth texture, truly belying its "recycled" origins.
A key feature of "Econyl® Yarn" is its focus on selecting fishing nets from discarded nylon waste, as fishing nets constitute 10% of ocean debris. To protect marine life and those who depend on the sea for their livelihood, discarded fishing nets are actively collected and recycled. Reportedly, discarded fishing nets are also sent from Japan for this process.
While there have been many requests from enthusiasts for nylon straps, Breitling had been searching for a material worthy of the Breitling name. Through their connection with "Outerknown," they discovered the exceptional "Econyl® Yarn," culminating in the "Outerknown Econyl® Yarn NATO Strap Collection." Some colors are not available in Japan.
