Omega's legendary movement that went to the moon, now in the latest Moonwatch
Omega announced the long-awaited revival of the iconic calibre 321 in early 2019. This calibre 321 was originally fitted into the Speedmaster series in 1957. The "Speedmaster ST105.003" was certified as official equipment that passed NASA's tests and is also known for being worn by astronaut Ed White during America's first spacewalk. This year, marking the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the first "Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum" equipped with this movement has been unveiled.
The "Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum" allows a view of the movement, which retains its original characteristics, through a sapphire crystal case back. The 42mm case, as its name suggests, is crafted from a special polished alloy of platinum and gold called platinum gold. The case features an asymmetrical shape with twisted lugs, inspired by the case design of the fourth-generation Speedmaster ST. The strap is black leather with a platinum buckle. The bezel follows the iconic Speedmaster design, with a black ceramic bezel and white enamel for the tachymeter scale.
This timepiece offers further allure. The step dial is made of onyx, creating a perfect harmony with the 18K white gold indices and hands (excluding the central chronograph seconds hand), and the deep black of the onyx.
Another distinctive feature is the three subdials adorned with lunar meteorite. In homage to the history of lunar exploration etched by the Speedmaster, slices of genuine lunar meteorite are incorporated into the design, expressing a firm connection to the calibre 321 that powered the Speedmasters worn on the moon.
This chronograph, allowing one to own a piece of Moonwatch history and a fragment of the moon itself, is a timepiece filled with the ultimate romance of space.
