Delacour CEO on the New 'Reflect Tourbillon' | DELACOUR

deLaCour

A Confident New Case Shape

deLaCour made a brilliant debut at Baselworld in 2003 with the "Bicrono," a fusion of original design and complex mechanisms. Since then, its user base has rapidly expanded to include royalty, celebrities, and famous athletes, and the company has focused on developing bespoke models through special orders. We've learned that the company's shrewd CEO, who propelled it to global brand status in just over a decade, visited Japan with a new model planned for release in 2016. An interview was arranged at Noble Styling Gallery, a leading retailer of deLaCour collections in Japan.

A New Legend Begins with the "Reflect Tourbillon"

The brand took the world by storm with the "Bicrono," featuring two chronographs, and the "Bityourbillon," equipped with two flying tourbillons. While "Sakura" continues to be a hit in Japan, deLaCour has developed a new model with a different, novel form. We asked Alfred Terzibachian to elaborate on this exquisite piece, which the CEO himself was involved in designing and engineering.

The new "Reflect Tourbillon" immediately catches the eye with its new case shape and red components. What was the development process behind it?

This is the first model created by our new in-house designer team. While retaining deLaCour's signature distinctive lugs and the dots on the bezel, we've achieved a sportier style. It's versatile, suitable for both formal and casual occasions, and offers exceptional comfort. The tourbillon movement is also newly developed. The vertical red components utilize synthetic rubies, typically used for jewels, in a cylindrical form.

Where did the innovative idea of using synthetic rubies come from? And what was the intention behind it?

The model's concept is inspired by buildings and architecture. Skyscrapers have pillars that maintain their form and strength. We've represented these pillars with synthetic rubies, and by adding horizontal bridges, we've created a robust structure. This design ensures that the movement is less susceptible to stress from impacts. Opting for raw synthetic rubies was the right choice to pursue unprecedented originality. The novel cylindrical design serves as a striking accent.

I was surprised by the see-through details on the face, back, and even the sides. What was the aim of this design?

The left side, at the 9 o'clock position, is also see-through, incorporating a unique idea to allow light into the case. This allows for a visual appreciation of the complex internal movement structure.

The case back is skeletonized where the tourbillon and main gears are located. The main plate's matte black finish is the finest enamel.

The skeleton dial consists of a beautifully reflective, shiny black main plate and bridges securing the synthetic ruby tubes.

Since the movement, with its beautiful red rubies, is a highlight, we focused on showcasing it. It's dynamic, almost as if it's alive. To allow appreciation from every angle, we've made not only the front and back but also the left side sapphire crystal see-through. The light entering through these openings enhances the brilliance of the cylindrical movement. Furthermore, the back of the movement is adorned with black enamel. The front has a glossy lacquer finish, while the back is matte. This contrast between light and shadow perfectly embodies the model's name, "Reflect."

It's clear that the case is designed to showcase the beautiful and technical movement. Do you plan to develop variations based on this style?

We are planning to develop models with even more complex movements, perhaps a chronograph, which is quite popular. While skeleton dials are a trend, deLaCour is taking a different approach, developing its own unique "showcase movement." Also, creating series with different ruby colors to match themes could be interesting.

As you can see from the intricate titanium case (composed of 25 parts), the "Reflect Tourbillon" took a year and a half to create the prototype. Of course, we conducted various tests in our workshop for durability and accuracy under different conditions. Most importantly, I personally conducted wear tests. So, I can confidently guarantee its quality (laughs).

Developing the Market with Smaller Ladies' Watches

In addition, new sizes have been added to the "Leap" ladies' model, first introduced in 2012. What was the reason for introducing smaller models to the market?

The "Leap" series, which inherits the brand's DNA of an oval shape, has been very well-received for its fusion of beauty and elegance. It is characterized by its grace and femininity, with a diamond circle set in the center. Originally available only in S and M sizes, we've added the smaller "XS" size due to popular demand. However, we didn't just make it smaller; we've streamlined the design, for instance, by omitting the seconds hand. I believe Japanese women will appreciate it.

Leap XS
The smooth, soft form of the existing Leap has been scaled down. The design, from the case back to the elongated lugs, is exquisite, making it easy to fit even slender wrists. Approximately 0.12 carats of diamonds are set in the center of the dial. Available with a two-layer mother-of-pearl dial (left) or a shiny black metal dial (right), each featuring embossed Roman numerals.

Case: Stainless steel
Dimensions: 32.5 x 36 x 7.5 mm
Movement: Quartz (Cal. DC221)
Strap: Crocodile
Water Resistance: 5 ATM
Price: ¥810,000
Limited Edition: 222 pieces total (mother-of-pearl dial and black dial)

A Brilliant Future Foretold by Talented "Creativity"

The "Reflect Tourbillon" is a deLaCour-esque design that masterfully manipulates light. Coupled with its in-house movement boasting the high precision of a tourbillon, and its rarity as one of only nine pieces worldwide, it is truly a unique, high-end piece. The "Leap XS," on the other hand, is a practical, smaller model born from a female perspective, while still embodying deLaCour's design codes. Both are new timepieces that embody the company's slogan, "SINCE TOMORROW."

Our future strategy is to carefully select our product lineup. However, we will continue to incorporate needs-based miniaturization, as seen with the Leap. Customization tailored to individual preferences will also be a key focus. deLaCour will continue to forge ahead in creating innovative timepieces that break free from conventional concepts. We hope you will look forward to our future endeavors.
