CUERVO Y SOBLINOS

Cuban Spirit in the Heart of Switzerland

Timepieces That Complement Cocktails and Cigars

Cuervo y Sobrinos traces its roots back to a jewelry and watch shop in Havana, Cuba. The booth itself creates a delightful illusion, as if one has stepped into a Latin hotel or bar. This year, the brand heightened its presentation, even exhibiting a classic car participating in the Cuervo y Sobrinos Cup, a classic car race bearing the brand's name. The 2015 novelties feature models inspired by designs from the former flagship store and by great figures associated with the brand, expressing its identity through historical episodes. The brand's unique worldview continues to expand.

Showcasing Exquisite Arabesque Engraving

See-through models, revealing the intricate inner workings of the watch, offer a delightful way to appreciate the mechanics of a timepiece. Observing the mainspring gradually unwind, the gears interlock, the escapement and balance wheel diligently oscillate, and the hands move in response – this is one of the pleasures of a mechanical watch.

As these are hand-wound rather than automatic, the case back offers an unobstructed view of the mechanism, allowing for a deeper appreciation. The delicate engraving on the dial, as well as the mainplate and bridges of the movement, can also be enjoyed. This arabesque pattern is a recreation of the ornamentation found on the vault of the former Cuervo y Sobrinos flagship store in Havana. This exquisite craftsmanship expresses the brand's distinctly Latin roots within the watchmaking world and serves as a precious timepiece that reaffirms the artistry of mechanical watches.

A Retro Expression of GMT Functionality

The model name "Velo" means "flight" in Spanish. While a GMT chronograph with a central 24-hour hand might evoke aviation watches, this model possesses a unique charm.

Incorporating design elements inspired by Cuervo y Sobrinos sketches from the 1940s, the blued steel hands and the numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock have a distinctly classical feel. The lugs feature a stepped decoration that extends to the chronograph push-pieces. The rotor visible through the case back is adorned with the same arabesque engraving found on the vault of the former Cuervo y Sobrinos flagship store in Havana. Its highly decorative nature and retro, chic ambiance are striking.

The strap's lining uses Alcantara, known for its durability and comfort. This watch is recommended for those seeking a timepiece with a second time zone function who are tired of conventional designs.

Winston Churchill, a Fan of Cuervo y Sobrinos

In the first half of the 20th century, Cuba was a scenic resort destination, attracting numerous wealthy and famous individuals from Europe and America, many of whom became clients of Cuervo y Sobrinos. Sir Winston Churchill, the British statesman who served as Prime Minister during World War II and the Cold War, was one such figure. As you know, he favored Cuban cigars, which became his trademark.

This limited edition model, featured in the "Robusto," a sports watch with an advanced modular structure, pays tribute to this great statesman. The ivory dial boasts a unique "craquelé" finish, giving the entire dial a cracked appearance and exuding a distinct vintage feel. The sapphire crystal on the see-through case back is adorned with a line drawing of Churchill's profile, complete with his hat and cigar, humorously capturing his likeness. This is an approachable limited edition watch that brings the history associated with Cuba closer to home.
