CHRISTOPHE CLARET

A niche luxury brand specializing in complex mechanisms

Features a minute repeater that chimes with beautiful resonance

Christophe Claret is a small-production workshop founded in 1992 by master watchmaker Christophe Claret, renowned for his expertise in complex mechanisms. Since 2009, the brand has been producing its own timepieces, and this year, they have once again prepared astonishing new creations showcasing their skilled craftsmanship. The "Allegro," in particular, which incorporates minute repeater, GMT, and big date functions, is a truly breathtaking achievement, a testament to Christophe Claret's technical prowess.

Chimes the current time with a simple pull of the lever

The "Allegro" is a highly functional model equipped with a minute repeater, GMT, and big date. A minute repeater is a complex mechanism that, when activated by pulling a lever, chimes the current time with the sound of bells. Typically, minute repeater mechanisms require a large number of parts, making it difficult to incorporate other complications. However, the "Allegro" successfully integrates three complications while meticulously refining the sound quality.
The GMT time is displayed on a sub-dial at 3 o'clock, with a big date at 12 o'clock. Adjustments for these functions can be made using push-buttons, offering excellent user-friendliness. The minute repeater is activated by operating a sliding lever on the left side of the case. The hammers that strike the gongs are located on the case back, and their movement can be observed through the see-through case back.

The sound produced by the cathedral gongs, which strike twice around the movement, is exceptionally beautiful. The watchmakers, possessing a keen sense of hearing, meticulously tune each one, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship expected from Christophe Claret, a brand with a history of creating masterful minute repeaters.

A sculpture emerges from the center of the dial

During the Roman era, Switzerland was known as Helvetia, with its capital city at "Aventicum" (modern-day Avenches). The Roman Museum of Avenches was responsible for the archaeological excavations of this significant site, which holds importance as a point of origin for Switzerland. In homage to these excavations, Christophe Claret has released a new timepiece.

The Aventicum displays time using a ring with small markers instead of traditional hour and minute hands. The dial features a replica of a sculpture of Marcus Aurelius, the wise emperor of the Roman Empire, excavated by the museum. A special "Mirascope" mirror structure is incorporated, allowing the sculpture to appear magnified as the viewing angle changes. The case back is adorned with an automatic winding rotor depicting five chariots, offering an engaging element that can be spun like a roulette wheel. Both the dial and the case back are filled with playful details, making this a model that exudes originality.

A new color for an astonishing complication utilizing magnets

Magnets are a major adversary to the accuracy of wristwatches, and bringing them close to a watch has always been forbidden. However, the X-TREM-1, first introduced in 2012, already incorporates magnets within its internal mechanism. It features an unprecedented structure where time is indicated by the position of iron spheres within transparent tubes located at both ends of the case.

The movement of these iron spheres is controlled by magnets housed within the case. As the magnets move, the iron spheres follow, creating a surprising mechanism. To prevent the escapement from becoming magnetized and compromising accuracy, it is positioned at the bottom of the case, with meticulous design ensuring it is unaffected by the magnets. This new iteration features a white gold case with slate blue PVD-treated titanium, a sophisticated grayish-blue hue that complements the blue strap and accentuates the cool, mechanical aesthetic of the watch.
