Richard Mille | RM028 Automatic Diver's

The second diver's model, following last year's "RM025".

By Yasuto Shibuya

Following the "RM025 Tourbillon Chronograph" announced in early 2009, the second diver's model from Richard Mille has arrived. Unlike the feature-rich "RM025," this model is characterized by its simple functionality. It features a variable inertia rotor that allows the owner to adjust the winding efficiency based on their usage by moving the position of the white gold weight. Furthermore, while maintaining simplicity, it is packed with the brand's unique attention to detail, including a skeletonized mechanical movement, a three-layer case that meets ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards for 300-meter water resistance, and a three-layer unidirectional rotating bezel securely joined by 22 torque screws.

Automatic winding, titanium case, rubber strap, 47mm case diameter, 14.6mm case thickness, 300m water resistance, ¥7,980,000, available now.

BRAND HISTORY

With the concept of "F1 of the watchmaking world," Richard Mille is a highly individualistic brand that relentlessly pursues "adopting only the highest functions and quality achievable at the present time." Its overflowing originality can be immediately felt upon encountering one of their timepieces, even at a glance.

After making a stunning debut in the watchmaking world with the "RM001" in 2001, the brand has gone on to devise unique mechanisms such as the V-shaped tourbillon bridge and the "variable inertia rotor" that adjusts winding efficiency according to wrist movement. All models are meticulously skeletonized and pursue extreme lightness by employing special materials like titanium and carbon.

Models using "Arcaluce," a new material also found in artificial satellites, have achieved an unbelievable total weight of less than 30g, despite being made of metal. Furthermore, they are characterized by their high durability, designed for hard use, representing a completely different dimension of luxury watchmaking.

The brand also actively engages in cross-industry collaborations, such as unveiling a collaborative model with renowned designer Philippe Starck at a charity auction. In 2007, two new models were released, boasting the thinnest and thickest case sizes, and the collection, which began with the "RM001," now extends to the "RM016." The future trajectory of the genius Richard Mille's ideas is eagerly anticipated.
